If Poland is as conservative as I’ve heard, this makes sense. Modern women don’t want to get trapped in a traditional marriage. So they don’t have kids.
Yet another thread about demography, in which 100 different people will try to explain how their idea is actually going to solve the problem and make birthrate go up (idea has been tried billion times in million countries, doesn’t work).
This is not specifically related to Poland, but I just wonder if there actually are any countries/regions/demographic groups where people are having more than 2.1 children per woman AND have good access to contraception and good equality between the sexes (where women can choose to not become a mother without heavy pressure from others)?
And if yes, what are the actual factors that correlate with people wanting 2+ kids?
Is the „problem“ actually that a lot of people don’t really want 2+ kids (under realistic circumstances, not „if you were a millionaire and didn’t have to work) if they are truly free to choose? There are a fairly big percentage of people who want 0 kids and some who cannot have any, so in practice you would need quite a lot of people having 3 or more kids to achieve 2.1 on average. Assuming we don’t want people who want 0 children to have children anyway.

I think a world with less people in it would be great. Wasn’t overpopulation a problem? There were about 50 million people in the U.K. in the 80s and now there’s 70 million. When was the quality of life better?
We need more funding for miners, farmers and the elderly then. This is the only way to fix the issue!
I am surprised how this articles pop up every 2 days. It’s simple: people can’t predict if they will have a job in 3 months and everything becomes more expensive every three months, companies close constantly…what sane person would think „this is a great time to start a family“.

as eastern european citizens how can we even start a family when we can barely afford to take care of ourselvs? high prices for housing and low monthly income, not to mention taxes after taxes after taxes.. it’s literally impossible

We already have an ample world population. It’s 8.2 billion and projected to keep growing until it reaches 10 billion, when it will begin to decline, FINALLY!! Thank goodness. Our current population is 3.5 times the carrying capacity of the Earth. Our current population is extremely unsustainable.
You don’t need hundreds of millions of people to have a vibrant and successful nation. You can be a nation of ten or twenty million people with advanced technology, high levels of knowledge and skills, and high quality public services and public infrastructure.
Many nations have mishandled housing and tax policies in ways that have made housing far too expensive.
Many nations have mishandled labour policy in ways that have weakened workers‘ rights and caused wages to lag far behind national productivity growth. Consequently, people struggle to make ends meet, especially with the high cost of housing. Raising children is expensive. Inequality of wealth has become extreme and toxic.
Hardly any nations have free child care / early childhood education and hardly any nations provide adequate amounts of paid parental leave for parents to stay at home to look after their kids during infancy and toddlerhood. Public policy in nearly every nation regards children as a cost, not an investment in our future.
People realise that there are many ways of having a fufilling life besides having children.
People realise that there are many ways of being socially connected and supported besides having children.
People realise that there are many ways of experiencing community and belonging besides having children.
There are many ways of contributing to and belonging to something larger than oneself besides having children.
We already have more than enough people choosing to have kids. We need to focus on the quality of our society rather than the size of it.

No, let’s artificially keep prices high and wages low. Only someone who sees Europe as an economic zone that must maintain its gdp at all costs would support such an idea.

Poland has a near total abortion ban. If women can’t get healthcare then they won’t have babies.
The reason why fertility is low across developed economies and falls the richer people get is that that’s what people actually want. Once the social taboo is gone, this is the result.
You would expect that bargaining power of young people would go up in cases like this, but each country just makes itself more and more hostile for young people.
Why do Polish politicians love to brag about how their economy will be bigger than Britain’s in 20 years time, which is extremely debatable in itself, when they have much more pressing problems?
It’s not a fertility issue. It’s a smartphone, social media and cost of living epidemic
