It died in 2000, with reality TV crap. MTV had Headbangers Ball in the 80s early 90s, and nu metal was huge in the late 90s getting airtime.

Haven’t watched it in years but in the foxtel days I spent countless hours over the years flicking through the music channels, mtv was mostly reality by then but already

In the 90s, as a teenager, I recall being bummed that everyone was sort of force fed the same media. Nevertheless, if you were an artsy music lover, MTV was the call. 120 minutes, Yo! mtv Raps and headbangers ball debuted and rotated really cool shit. I’d have guessed at the time that the internet would improve on the formula for the betterment of us all. But now I miss it so much. The common reference points and all that entails. Sitting through Sweet Potato Pie to get to Sober and vice versa I think helped bridge cultures. Algorithms divide and conquer.
Anyway, happy new year from New Zealand.
