    1. I live in Madagascar and that’s surprising. Family and friends are a big thing here. How was this measured ?

Quite a different trend than I expected. All I ever hear about is how Western countries are individualistic and isolating while (most, not all) non Western countries have a larger emphasis on family, friends and community.

How was this measured? What does it even mean lol, feelings aren’t easily quantifiable like this. I felt lonely yesterday in one society where someone has close and happy ties but is honest about their feelings and lonely here just means naturally being human, would mean something 180 degrees different from someone in a society where they are deeply disconnect from support structures and is suicidally lonely.

I don’t necessarily deny the data, but the results are quite surprising from my point of view. The loneliness epidemic is discussed a lot in Western countries (especially among the youth and the retirees), and I see a lot of countries with collectivist cultures reaching high rates of loneliness.
