Lot of gun owners won’t hand willingly turn them in and are just happy (relatively speaking) with them being unusable bricks in their gun vaults and most provinces and their police departments wont support this malignant stupidity meant to appeal to irrational urbanite Montrealers.

Fact is, our gun laws aren’t based on common sense. They’re based on the fear of urban voters who don’t interact with or see guns, and if they do see one it will likely be a stolen handgun smuggled from the United States. There’s a reason our forbidden/restricted list is more or less a vibe check made by people who don’t know guns.

Seriously. One of the guns its illegal to own in Canada is a space prototype, about 1000 of which exist worldwide and none of which have ammo that you can buy. The reason why its banned? It was in some gun magazines in the 90’s and looked scary and futuristic. Unserious fucking policy at its most extreme.

Almost like pretty much everybody outside a couple cities in the East hates this stupid idea, and we’re yet again being screwed over just for their (purely imagined) benefit.

Cancel this program and use it for more rifle training. My local training centres have waiting lists. They say they haven’t seen this much interest in decades. I’m getting my hunting license this January.

I don’t see the problem with giving people the option to sell their guns… rural vs city doesn’t really matter. I don’t see a farmer getting rid of a gun they use… I see people getting rid of guns they have no need or desire for. Am I misunderstanding something?

Edit: Ah it’s the banning which forces selling thing. That would be unfair. You’re a criminal or you sell. I can understand that being a rough spot even though I feel like it’s unlikely that people have many assault rifles in Canada. Still an overreach.

Weird, liberals in the other thread was like no one outside of reddit cares about this. It’s almost like reddit liberals live in their own little bubble.

It’s not a buy back because the guns weren’t purchased from the government. It is a confiscation program full stop.

Ask yourself this:

Someone had a hit and run in a red car.

40 years later, you decide to get your driver’s license. You complete the test requiring you to get it, get your insurance and all associated legal paperwork as required and then you decide to get a $20,000 red vehicle that you maybe take out a couple of times a year and put an extremely low amount of kilometers on it.

Decades go by and then all of a sudden the government says ‚you can’t drive xyz model of vehicle, for no reason other than its red‘ except they don’t tell you which vehicles and then come out with an entirely new blanket list approximately a year later.

So, manufacturers decide to check with the government which vehicles are fine and which aren’t. Keep in mind, the list is entirely arbitrary. The government then provided them with specifications that they wouldn’t ban.

The manufacturers retool their processes to create the ideal red vehicle in the eyes of the government.

Months later, the government bans that specific model that the company got specific, express permission to create.

Then, the government says ‚well, we will buy it from you to convince you to turn it in‘

‚for full market value/what I paid for it?‘

‚well, no. We will offer you $500, but you don’t have the choice to not take it, if you turn it in.‘

If this happened, would it be considered ok? Absolutely not. But because it affects a subsection of the population, people as a whole aren’t bothered by it.

This is the reality Canadian gun owners are facing. Despite having decades of proof legal gun owners are not the cause of gun crime.

Considering the geopolitical situation, the prudent thing would be to have more responsible gun owning private citizens. Just in case.

This could legitimately lose them the next election if they keep this shit up lol

At least we can all look forward to the better life this will provide for residents of Ottawa and Toronto who are intimidated by black colored guns owned by extensively vetted legal gun owners.
