If you want to buy serious hardware today, seriously wait until the prices come down.

Sure is a fun time to be in medical research IT. The government is decimating grant funding at the same time that all the hardware our researchers need is getting more expensive.
My RAM and SSD have doubled in price. I want off this ride.
If you think this is insane you should see future contract prices. For a June 2026 order the price I see for a 2TB SSD from a major manufacturer is 2x what we paid in 2022. $312 (wholesale) for a 2TB drive.
At my side gig we have been expanding our services due to more storage, but we also have to replace drives that are hitting EOL (4 years for us). It means we have three options:
* Extend our EOL and risk customer failures
* Stop expanding our services and have less revenue despite higher costs
* Increase our service costs to customers by about 30% to cover increased SSD costs
It’s honestly insane. If we’re seeing 200% increase for just 6 months out at wholesale prices, it means retail will likely be even more. A 200% increase over 2022 prices at **retail** pricing, would equate to a ~$450 2TB SSD.
I’d say buy an SSD now, because the contracts I see are going up everyday I look.
AI boom was always planned, private equity trumping private ownership, you will rent your PC hardware and be happy.

I paid $140 for a Samsung 2 TB SSD for my PS5 a year ago. That same one goes for $220 now. Insane

I just paid $600 for an 8 tb WD SSD (not sure if the exact same drive) to put in my PS5 not too long ago.
If this trend holds, I have a bunch of 256GB samsung ssds in a misc tech bin from when computer lab I worked at closed down, like probably 30~35 of them, also some 4TB oldschool fatty hdds.
