Even though I’m never paying for a Globe and Mail subscription, I will comment that I have not seen anything substantial come from Carney’s leadership this year. I have heard a lot of talk …..but have seen no action.
Changes are huge and overdue. Not abiding by Trump’s demands is huge in itself. Free trade has been a mixed blessing so we should measure our response to the threats.
Structural changes take time to put in place, and even more time to take hold enough to make visible effects.
Much of our (Canadian) economy was built on tight integration with the US market. It will take a lot of effort to change that, and since commerce is primarily the domain of the provinces and private enterprise, there are a lot of entities that need to be persuaded to switch direction.
