Bring back the Volvo plant in Halifax!
People want a lot of things until it means spending more, still I think it’s in the best interests of western countries to protect their industries from China
Well considering that we don’t have a domestic automaker it’s not really up to us. Sure, we can entice companies to build them here to avoid import duties, but at the end of the day the Canadian consumer will be the one feeling the pain if imports are restricted or slapped with duties. The automaking giants will all survive without the Canadian market.
And they actually do buy domestic. The top selling vehicles in Canada (Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV & Civic, Chevy Silverado) all have their final assembly in Ontario
Ok, but will they pay the extra money that will cost?
I just want hatchbacks and wagons to make a comeback. Tired of soulless crossovers and SUVs that are too big for what I need.
No they do not. This is simply not true. We want good quality, affordable vehicles.

Most Canadians want cars that are cheaper. DNGAF where it comes from.
I want a Toyota Hilux and I don’t care where it’s made.
We want something we can afford. I know my most reliable car was assembled in Japan. I’ve had a Canadian assembled car and it was fine too. Domestic is more of a nice-to-have. I’m not paying extra for a car just because it was assembled domestically.
I found a bit more detailed [description of the survey](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/canadians-call-for-a-new-automotive-strategy-to-build-canada-strong-new-kpmg-canada-survey-852527411.html) (though not the survey itself) and it seems what people are especially concerned about is manufacturing plants moving south, and about reducing reliance on the US generally. It’s notable confidence is down for the big three, but Honda and Toyota are fine.
No info on regional breakdown, which would be interesting.

Most Canadians want everything made domestically, my brain says.
Everything else being the same, if we had the choice wouldn’t we want every product we use to be made in Canada ?

Currently sitting in a Honda Dealership because the vehicle I’m looking at is made in Canada by Honda.
All things equal? Sure, why not. Makes complete sense.
The real question is: how much more are Canadians willing to pay for a domestic vehicle?
Most Canadians want an affordable, reliable car and don’t give a damn where it is made.
I just want the Toyota hilux. Or Kei trucks.
And while we are at it, I also want our domestically made cars to be “dumb” cars.
I want a vehicle that’s not designed to break down.
I requested that my new Silverado be built in Oshawa.
The last one was Oshawa-made, and so is my new one.
The other vehicle is a Pacifica, made in Windsor.
We have options, albeit limited, but we have options here with Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and GM, albeit limited, but we have options.
Then maybe we can put some sense back into headlights.
They asked the wrong question. Should have been “how much of a premium are you willing to pay to purchase a car ‘made in Canada’”?

The problem is the price. Affordable car made in other country would cost easily 25% more just because wages are higher.
KPMG and their likes are entirely useless organizations. They will publish a report advocating for whoever is paying them.
The most problematic of all these organisations is McKinsey, earning hundreds of millions from the govt because of all the ministers who hand out govt contracts to them for useless „consulting“. Dominic Barton – the father of the century initiative is also a McK alum. So you can imagine if your a hire a McK consultant, what are they going to parrot.
Quite sad actually that the most brilliant minds choose to put their talent on uselss work and chase money
