It is fascinating to see the „ghost planet“ mystery finally reach a resolution. We went from celebrating Fomalhaut b as one of the first directly imaged exoplanets to realizing we were actually witnessing the immediate aftermath of a massive collision between two icy bodies.
It is a perfect example of the scientific method in action—correcting a previous hypothesis as new data (and 20 years of observation) becomes available. Seeing that dust cloud expand and fade gives us a rare, real-time look at the chaotic „demolition derby“ phase of planetary system formation.
