>More than 800 storm victims around Helene-battered western North Carolina have applied under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. State officials vetted applications and began sending them up the chain to FEMA as far back as February. As of Dec. 15, they had sent nearly 600 buyout requests to Washington, with more likely to follow.
>So far, they say, not a single approval has come through.
>Rob Moore, who has long studied flooding risks and disaster policy for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said buyouts under FEMA’s hazard mitigation program have been an important tool for decades.
>When it works as intended, voluntary buyouts allow homeowners to receive the pre-disaster value for their homes so that they can relocate and start over. The program can help communities reduce overall flood risk and better prepare for future calamities, as part of the deal is that properties acquired by the government are turned into open space.

Trump’d rather torture people in forced disappearances.

Another reminder that this administration will not help everyday Americans in crisis….unless it benefits them in some way.

FEMA buyouts are always super slow and a lot of people end up waiting years just to get any kind of answer. Most give up or move on before anything happens.

Wonder how many of them voted for Trump and celebrated when Elon gutted the federal government?

Western North Carolina voted heavily for Trump in 2024 and he carried the state by less than 1%. These are his theoretical „friends“ being screwed.

It just would be sooo wasteful to give government money to them. The Trumps and their investors won’t be able to benefit from the government spending.

100% guarantee the distressed assets/foreclosed properties will be bought out by Trump admin insiders for pennies on the dollar.

This administration wants to cut reliance upon any federal system. FEMA reduction is high on their list. If you build in an area with any natural risk that isn’t covered by insurance, be prepared to lose everything is an event occurs. It’s part of the MAGA plan.

Perhaps the NC legislature should either tell their constituents to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps or provide the money with a new tax. Maybe if they take more authority away from elected Democrats everything will work out.

Living north of Asheville in a small town on the Ivy River and let me tell you what this looks like to those here:
Flooded, abandoned homes, a constant reminder of the destruction of Helene
Several home and business owners in our town signed up for this program, and are still waiting…and everyone in the community sees the ruin and government apathy daily.

By design. This administration sabotaged the agency by eliminating large portions of their permanent staff and now will make the claim that this “failure” (and many other instances nationwide) demonstrate its ineffectiveness. Then they’ll have the false justification they wanted in order to dismantle what remains of FEMA.

Hope they remember that when they vote in 20 and 28. The current regime is not their friend.
