    1. This is good news. We should not normalize private health care especially in publicly funded hospitals

Must be pretty distressing and frustrating for those who want private treatment can’t pay for it.

    3. Great news; the more resources that can be put into public care the better.

I’m sure if there’s demand a private hospital will fill the gap for private patients.

I wish they’d put some time/money/effort into improving the care in public maternity services before they removed private

I used semi private for my second kid, mainly because of the public appointment waiting time. I couldn’t afford to wait hours as I needed to be there for my first kid like picking them up from childcare etc…

    6. Presume this means that the private health insurance will drop in price from vhi and laya so since that was a key benefit. Although I doubt it.

Also from the article 8-10% of the hospital funding comes from private. Who’s going to replace that funding?

    7. My wifes first pregnancy became high risk , as a public patient she had more frequent check ups. There were some check ups they were several hours behind schedule as emergencies came up. This in itself is very problematic for those with kids already needing pickups etc. but what bothered her more was every single appointment was a different doctor, none of which had the time to read up on her case specifics, so she has to bring them up to speed every time and often had a slightly different view on things than the previous doctor. In the end my wife ended up giving birth over 4 weeks early by emergency c section and the small fella in neonatal for a few weeks.

On her 2nd of course she went private cause she was happy to pay to see the same experienced doctor each time, I don’t blame her. Her scans were done in his office like clockwork, no waiting around.

The public system needs to improve before choice is taken away. In cork there is no private hospital to take maternity patients as they wanted it all centralized at CUH.

    8. I dont think it’s a good thing that options are being taken away. Why can we choose private care for every area of healthcare, except for pregnancy?
