I have an extremely limited understanding of neuroscience, but this makes sense to me within my limited understanding and personal experience. I have autism and ADHD, one or both of which gives me severe anxiety that until a few months ago could only be treated with prescription stimulants like Adderall. I started taking an amino acid called NAC that has some kind of effect on glutamate (and glutathione? Again, my understanding is very limited), and while I still need stimulants for other symptoms, my anxiety went away and has never come back. I assume it would come back if I stopped taking the NAC, but it’s been absolutely life changing. I was able to drastically reduce the amount of stimulants I take. I hope there’s a lot more research into this in the future.

    2. This makes me wonder if MSG (also known as e621 to the FDA), is good for autism, since it increases levels of glutamate in the blood, this increasing the likelihood of recepter interaction.  If their are any drugs that upregulate this receptor’s expression, that could be a possible therapy to treat the condition.
