  1. Young people in Britain will soon be offered the chance of a “gap year” through a new paid program in the armed forces, the government announced Saturday.

Set to launch in March 2026, the Armed Forces Foundation Scheme aims to initially recruit around 150 people to experience military life, without long-term commitment.

The program will give participants the opportunity to spend a year training and working across the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. Government officials hope to grow the scheme to over 1,000 young people, “subject to interest,” the government said in a [statement](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/armed-forces-to-launch-gap-year-scheme-for-young-people-to-bolster-skills-and-leadership).

Defense Secretary John Healey said the scheme marked “a new era for Defence,” adding that it would open up opportunities for young people to experience the skills and training offered by the armed forces.

The program is aimed at school leavers and young adults under 25, who may be unsure about their future career path. Those taking part will be paid and offered hands-on exposure to life in the armed forces, including basic training and placements that could involve working at sea or alongside specialist units. Participants in the proposed gap-year program would not be sent on active operations.

Having worked with reservists programs across a few different countries i can confirm that uses approach to attracting talent isn’t as successful as aus, can and us and to some extent ger and pol.

In the current world if you can’t have people trained while they are still going to school, you might get them only after they have sunk their hopes of finding work, thus in a worse mental state.

For comparison, both can, aus and nz have some for of military work that covers one night a week, one weekend a month, that can pay up to 20k (aus) a yr.

  3. I’ve always said that every country needs that. It reinforces social cohesion, teaches skills and discipline, maybe healthy discipline, and can inspire some people to pursue a career they wouldn’t have tried otherwise.

  4. I like this idea even if there isn’t a looming threat of war. I really only see upsides.

If this was recruiting from the 3 cadet forces I can see it working, a lot of us were never quite sure if going into the military or a civilian career via college was the right path. Most went civilian as we still hadn’t worked out who we were yet.

A trial period with no consequence if you decide it is not your cup of tea and for others it confirm this is the right path to a career.

So if things were to kick off and people be called up, would this put these people further up the list?
