How for example modern Germany claimed to be successor? And if this is about historical entities on the territory of modern countries (like HRE), then why for example Czechia is not counted also?

What are the rules for such „claim“

    2. What about Romania? They claim to be descendants – doesn’t that sorta mean successor?

    3. How can Russia claim that, they barely had any territory in the empire to begin with.

    4. Very misleading map since in most cases it wasn’t modern day countries that made the claim. Germany and the Holy Roman empire are 2 very different things, as are Turkey and the Ottoman Empire

Er, idk you probably didnt know this but Spain has claimed it since, well, a long long time go, and its a direct official legal claim.

    6. And they all had a very logical reason for it… except Russia. No idea what went through their heads.

The empire did split into the Western and Eastern Roman Empire. So you will find at least the countries within each to have a valid claim on the matter.

So you would end up with the HRE and the Byzantine Empire and it all evolved from there.

    7. The Crown of Spain has an official title of Emperor of the Western Roman Empire

    8. There’s the Holy Roman Empire, which was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire haha

    9. Basically any ruler that called themselves Emperor, Basileus or Tzar(Caesar), except for the British Empire. Macedonia was a part of most of those empires almost in continuity(with brief stints in the Serbian and Bulgarian empires) from the start of the Roman to it’s finish in the end of the Ottomans, as the Eastern Roman empire and then the Ottomans had an unbroken chain on the throne.

    10. Below some lyrics of the Romanian anthem. There needs to be a light green spot in the map if you ask me.

Let us now or never prove to the world,

That in these hands a Roman blood is still flowing,

And that in our chests we proudly keep a name

Victorious in battles, a name of Trajan

As far as I know, Russia claimed to be the „Third Rome,“ but it was primarily about the Eastern Roman Empire. Moreover, it is primarily not about everyday life, politics, etc., but about Orthodox Christianity.

    12. Romania not a claim to Rome’s heritage ?

Roma-nia… Let’s say it should ring a bell, shouldn’t it?

    13. Didnt Spain even bought the rights from the byzantines to claimto be rome’s succesor?

“Rome, Byzantium, Moscow – a fourth Rome there shall not be”.

(This is a quote, not a statement of support for it).

    15. Well, the ruler of the Czech Republic was the head of the Holy Roman Empire.

    16. Correct answer: Washington DC is the new Rome.

Only other answer I will accept is New York City.
