„The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, [made three calls to his Egyptian counterpart](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/12/hopes-rise-of-pardon-for-abd-el-fattah-as-starmer-speaks-with-egypt-president), Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, and the UK national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, also personally urged the Egyptians to end his detention.“

I respect a Prime Minister that will fight for their citizens. Well done, Keir.

Edit: Gotta love that someone downvoted this. You against releasing British secular pro-democracy activists from dictatorship prisons?

      > On 26 March 2013, he was arrested for inciting aggression during a protest outside the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters, known as the Mokattam Clashes of March 2013

Someone too extreme for Islamic countries is apparently ideal to be here

2013 was the change in government post the Arab spring, riddle me this why would the current Egyptian gov who banned the brotherhood lock up this dude if he was such an opponent of the brotherhood?

      > His third arrest came in the heart of the counter-revolutionary wave. On July 3, 2013, the military, led by al-Sisi, overthrew Mohamed Morsi, the democratically elected president from the Muslim Brotherhood, delivering a mortal blow to the revolution. Many on Egypt’s left, fearing the Brotherhood’s push to Islamize the country, accepted—or even welcomed—the return of the generals. Not Alaa. He continued to organize protests in Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 2011 uprising. But the crowds had dwindled to just a few thousand activists, and the regime found it easy to crush dissent with sweeping, ruthless repression.

And there we go the dude is a leftist who supported the brotherhood in 2013 and before

A bit odd that getting hold of an activist with some dodgy twitter posts about “killing all Zionists” is described as a top priority by Starmer, Lammy, and Cooper.

      >non-sectarian

Nothing says non-sectarianism quite like repeatedly calling for the deaths of Israelis.

[https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/egyptian-human-rights-activist-hits-back-after-peace-prize-nomination-withdrawn](https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/egyptian-human-rights-activist-hits-back-after-peace-prize-nomination-withdrawn) What the Middle East Eye leaves out is that the armed resistance Alaa Abdel Fatah was calling for is targeted against civilians. It isn’t a war where civilians stop supporting it due to military casualties – civilians are the target. And the armed groups fighting Israel, the ones he endorsed the tactics of, treat their own civilians as nothing but political pawns.
