The head of the conservative EPP group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, advocates for German soldiers under the European flag to participate in securing a peace solution in Ukraine. „I wish for soldiers with the European flag on their uniforms who, together with our Ukrainian friends, would ensure peace“, the CSU politician told the newspapers of the Funke Media Group.
Europe must take responsibility for Ukraine’s security, Weber emphasized. „After a ceasefire or peace agreement, the European flag must fly along the security line.“
Ukraine has been resisting Russia’s war of aggression for almost four years. Despite intensive diplomatic efforts at various levels, there is no end in sight to the war.
The EPP party and group leader was sceptical about the prospects of a quick ceasefire. „Putin is leading us by the nose. To this day, he sits in the Kremlin and is pleased with how the West is arguing and dividing“, said the CSU politician. Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent tens of thousands of young soldiers to their deaths. „I can’t see Putin taking the path of peace“, Weber said. Peace will only come if Europeans show strength and speak with one voice. Putin must realize that he is not achieving his war aims.
The CSU deputy chairman also called on the European Union to respond to Washington’s departure from Europe with a new security strategy. „2025 is a Turning year in history, as Donald Trump’s security strategy also shows“, Weber told the Funke newspapers. „Europe stands naked in a cold world full of storms“. The consequence is: „We must stop shaping our policies from Washington papers“, Weber warned. He demanded: „We must write our own security strategy, put Europe’s architecture to the test, and finally act confidently.“

It’s just Manfred Weber, whose statement are rather irrelevant for CSU.

And what happens when Russia declares them valid targets and starts pounding them with drones by the time they reach the frontline? Are they gonna start fighting the Russians? Will they send EFs into contested airspace to take out supply lines?

Manfred Weber is arguably one of the most influential political leaders in Europe and is pushing toward a European Army on a step-by-step basis. He leads the largest fraction in Parliament 🇪🇺 and his CSU is part of Chancellor Merz‘ CDU as well. The recently approved resolution on the [European Command and Control structure](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/1o2xein/comment/nir13ng/) was initiated by his fraction. A step toward a Defence Union that includes a real European Army. Nato should become a two pillar organization.

Hm, it’s not the worst idea I’ve heard. I think the point here is to make it a European operation, not a German one. They wouldn’t want to be profiled.

Remember when Germany/merz were swearing three times a day about how they’d give ukraine taurus? How it was a national shame that they had not been provided already? Remember 6 months ago when they were talking about how theyd give ukraine long range weapons?
Yeah. Same with this.

He is not the leader of the CSU.
He is the faction leader of the CSU in the EU Parliament.
The leader of the CSU is still Markus Söder.

That’s great to hear.
But why are you working together in the parliament with the Putin bootlickers (Patriots and ESN) to push deregulatoin/anti-climate laws, Manfred?
How are we to take you seriously that this isn’t just virtue signalling when you have no problems to vote hand in hand with Russia’s agents in Europe?

Peace keeping while being on the same side as one of the belligerents must be one of the dumbest ideas to come out of Deutschland in recent decades.

Rule of thumb that will serve you well in 99% of the cases: Never take grand posturing by EU politicians seriously. The „nothing ever happens“ meme has fallen out of fashion in the US because Trump is crazy and this at least yields some change here and there (often for the worse), but it remains true for the EU.

Let’s be fully transparent – at this point no one wants to deploy troops to Ukraine, at least not until Moscow agrees to it (which is very unlikely to happen)- that’s the reality. In the case something happens and there are human losses, this would be suicidal for the politician who pushed for it. Just imagine on how many votes this will bring to Afd. Same thing in France with the RN.

I guess it may come as a shock to the commoner, but with US betrayal it’s unlikely that Russia will stop doubling down on this stupid bet. And since Ukraine can only last as long as it can, Euopeans will need to take an active role the war eventually. After all this is a war Russia made against the European Union.
This development is just the obvious consequence, nothing crazy. Germany is not the only European country reading for the next stage.
