I lived in Alabama for 30 years. I can confirm we had plenty 70°F Christmases.

    2. Not too many white Christmases in SE Wisconsin recently. Gotta be 30% or less in the last 20 years

We would’ve had a white Christmas this year if Christmas was held any day in the first half of December

Chicago is like 5%, don’t remember the last white Christmas it’s been so long

Checking in from Maine. We got 9-14 inches two days ago depending on the location. Definitely a white Christmas here.

Wow considering NYC is always really Christmas associated, I really thought they were having white Christmas way more often up there. I thought it was the norm.

Despite it’s reputation for snow, Buffalo NY doesn’t normally have a white Christmas.

Haven’t had a white Christmas in 15+ years in the 10-25% range.

    8. TL;DR: roughly 8% of the population of the USA is more likely than not to have a White Christmas.

My first thought when I saw this was “how does this correlate with population distribution?”. My second thought was “should I really look to answer this question on Christmas Day?” – the answer was “yes”, but with a few short cuts.

Answer: 8.3% of the population of the USA has more than a 50:50 chance of >1 inch of snow lying on the ground on Christmas Day.

[Snowfall Probabilities by Weather Station from 1991-2020 Climate Normals](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/media/3501)

[County Population Totals and Components of Change: 2020-2024](https://www.census.gov/data/datasets/time-series/demo/popest/2020s-counties-total.html)

      Method:
I’ve stripped out any stations which don’t have a valid dataset for snowfall (19.5%) and assigned county populations to the nearest station (splitting population equally across weather stations in a county, and assigning populations to neighbouring counties when no weather station is available). I’ve aggregated populations into 10%, 20%, 30% and so on probabilities of snow and so on).

There are some weaknesses in this, for example county populations are a bit too big for my liking. I’ll maybe take another look at this and do a longer post on r/weather. Just not on Christmas Day.

    9. It’s one of the coldest Christmases I can remember here in Alberta. Hovers between -20c and – 30c and plenty of snow.

      Ski conditions are great though!

Edit: come to think of it, these aren’t entirely uncommon temps for December here.

As a Canadian, the phrase white christmas is so weird to me. Like no one in my family, even my 80+ year old grandparents, can remember a christmas without snow

We got a white Christmas just north of Boston. Dusting-inch on the ground from yesterday, light flurries right now.

    12. It’s 55 degrees and raining here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pray for us, everybody.

    13. Original white christmas was in Sweden where Jesus was born. Oh wait, he was born in Palestine where it never snows?

    14. i wish it was snowing today in Minnesota! the melting snow looks like dirt! merry xmas!

    15. There’s snow on the ground here in Minnesota. Not super deep in the Twin Cities but it counts!

    16. I feel like that purple color used to go a lot closer to the coast in the northeast , maybe I’m remembering it different when growing up
