  1. Good.

But also, good luck with that. France made Haiti pay reparations for the slave revolt centuries ago. . .

How well did Trump’s demand that Mexico pay for the wall go?

    Sovereign nations are just that.

Investigate OP’s family history going back about 300 years and then punish them for any crimes committed by any of their ancestors 🙂

This is just sillyness, a lot like politicians in Argentina bringing up the Falklands whenever there’s something bubbling up to the surface. Algeria could absolutely benefit from making more deals with european countries, this is a waste of their time.

The French colonization of Algeria was, in many instances, 100% a crime against humanity. One of the most brutal colonial regimes in Africa, which is a really high bar to clear; the only one I can think of off the top of my head that was even worse was the Belgian Congo.

But admitting that anyone is owed restitution, even for crimes committed within living memory (Algeria didn’t win independence until 1962), would mean that France would have to grapple with its responsibility for some incredibly evil things it has done as a nation and it is not ready to do that at the moment unfortunately.

In 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland, the Nepalese were obliged to declare war on Germany. They sent a cable saying as much.

    Hitler wrote back, „oh no.”

The five greatest military powers in the world are the US, Russia, the UK, China and Algeria.

I’m sure the French are quaking in their boots.

They should be happy and grateful France gave them the borders they have today (e.g whole oil reserves found in the Sahara desert no one wanted in the past).

France will absolutely never do this in a million years, but also, all of these comments defending France’s empire are fucking wild. This wasn’t 300 years ago. Algeria only officially gained independence in the mid-20th century.

Why is everyone acting like this is ridiculous? Algeria was pillaged by French Imperialism for over a century, with scholars generally agreeing the Pacification of Algeria constituted genocide. The Barbary pirates were not committing genocide, and comparing the actions of rogue actors to state sponsored genocide is an apples to oranges comparison. France should pay financial restitution for their crimes.

If Japan needs to apologize to South Korea then France should apologize to Algeria.
What’s wrong with apologizing for colonization?

Cool well guess all the Algerians that got French passports because of it can go back to Algeria then and enjoy .

Cool, gonna start demanding reparations from all Arabs for running the largest slave trade in history.

I doubt these can be enforced and at most they’ll be used as a reason to keep French interests (businesses and military) out of the country.

On a side note, it’s pretty funny to see Europe(ans) so fiercely defend that Russia must pay reparations to Ukraine. Then wonder why we’re seen as hipocrites

Algeria really should have agreed to become a fully fledged part of France. Would have been 1000x better for them.

  15. Well, I had a feeling if I came in here with a bucket of popcorn there’d be some really stupid takes to laugh at.

    I was right.

Is this how Algeria justifies spending almost 10% of their GDP on military expenditures? Because they think France will come back?

I demand restitution from the dinosaurs for colonizing where I live

  18. Arrrchitect on

The colonization by the Caliphates was a crime. Algeria, as one of the successor states, should pay restitution to the numerous descendants of the victims.

  19. France should not pay for these reparations they were in the 1950s they were ages ago just like Japan should not pay for reparations for ww2 it was almost 100 years ago

  20. krametthesecond on

Yeah the reparations are already being paid out to the hundreds of thousands of Algerians receiving RSA

  21. SmilingHappyLaughing on

Does Algeria plan to pay restitution for the millions of slaves they captured and traded?

No problem, in the next post about China-Africa cooperation, you’ll find that these white people who defended European colonization of Africa have suddenly started to care about China’s „neo-colonialism“ in Africa.

I know someone, knew I guess as she passed away a couple of years ago, who had electrodes hooked up to her by the French to try to make her talk. She was just a fairly young, innocent girl and didn’t know anything about the revolutionaries, but the French soldiers did decide that they should torture and humiliate her for being Algerian. Picture your grannie- probably about the same age.

I also know some people whose uncles were unceremoniously shot by French soldiers. The soldiers came, told the women and children to go upstair, and then shot the three men who happened to be in their own house in their own country. One of the kids got loose and ran downstairs just in time to see his father and uncles murdered.

Those kind of crimes weren’t uncommon in that war. And honestly the trauma messed a lot of Algerians up. There’s a reason the least stable places with the most political violence and religious extremists are ex-colonies- it’s a bad, evil system that doesn’t encourage development of stable, healthy democracies. Algeria’s doing remarkably well given how recently its people were traumatize, and how much of its wealth had been siphoned off to support the corrupt occupation, but they’re still paying for the trauma inflicted by the French- and their amazing resilience doesn’t reduce the level of crimes committed by the French government.

  24. These are the people who raided the European coasts for slaves before being colonized yes?

  25. Icedanielization on

My take on these sorts of things, and I know its not great to hear, but any advantage/infrastructure/development gained while under that colonial power should also be taken into account. I don’t think its right to expect full restitution and keep the roads, stable government, KFC and everything else.
