      Imagine pausing a world war just to argue over offside calls football really is universal diplomacy.

      It always amazes me how powerful football is around the world. I remember hearing stories from the time when Portugal was fighting the colonial war in Africa, about how the fighting would often pause when big matches were happening back home. For example, during the 1966 World Cup, or during the derbies and clásicos between Portugal’s “big three.” And especially when Benfica were playing in the Champions League during their golden era (even though I’m a Porto fan). The most fascinating part is that it wasn’t only the Portuguese soldiers who stopped to follow the games the African guerrillas would pause as well, because they were also following Portuguese football.

      Football is an easy game. 

      Eleven players on each team kick a ball back and forth for 90 minutes, and in the end Germany wins.

      Will never understand why soldiers rather shoot another soldier, instead of shooting the politicians, their true and common enemy.

      Its always been astonishing to me how 2 sides could just come together, have little bit of fun, exhange gifts, see how they are no different from you, remember the good days from before the war, and then… resume killing each other? Not make peace but kill each other? Its tragic war did not end that day.

      I get fighting a war and being enemies. It may be idiotic but i get it. What i don’t get is having millions die, then coming together and remembering how peaceful it all could be, how they all could get along – but then just going back to killing.

      Some of them even took cover in each other’s trenches in rare occasions like this, some of them were even known for going over to other side to eat a meal…

      What a waste.

      World War 1 being the last „old timey nonsensical war before WW2/the plight of the common soldief“ as it shows up in western and specially UK/USA media lives on with these mythical events that have taken a space bigger than the Russian theater or electric fences for Belgians
