      I have a very different understanding of the word “revolutionised”. The iPhone when it first came out? Yes. Faster and more energy efficient processors? Not so much.

      I don’t foresee Apple ditching ARM anytime soon. However, if the architecture were to stall, I could see considerations for RISC-V or something new if future demands require it.

      Although they are fine chips and I’ve enjoyed my MacBook Pro, saying that M-chips revolutionized computing is simply bullshit. They aren’t doing computing stuff any differently compared to alternatives or changed how we use computers.

      I hate apple so much but it’s impossible to deny how much better their arm based processors are compared to what Intel and AMD put out

      What’s next? No significant improvement for the next two years due to the RAM price.

      I really wish Apple would be a big part of getting Linux to work on their chips. I know they aren’t the only ARM chips worth using. But we need to get Linux on ARM (64) into the mainstream because at the low end it’s just far more capable at a lower cost and size than Intel.

    8. Apple ARM chips are so ahead of the times. I’m still on a 2020 M1 MBA that’s still doing perfectly fine, and I can’t justify buying something new.

    9. I really wish Apple took gaming seriously.

      Figuring out high fidelity gaming optimization on their ARM architecture would be phenomenal for all-in-one computing purchases.

      It would open up both Apple and the gaming industry to entirely new possibilities.

    10. what apple did was asic concept and use arm to make it cheaply enough and low power. but intern now apple m series is stalling across the board with not alot of more up lift gain.

    11. What apple did was actually pretty smart. And as unlikely as it sounds, now they also have the benefit of very easily switching to ARM stock cores if they somehow lose their edge in chip design.

      Just because Apple is vertically integrated hardware and software allows them to change cpu, doesn’t mean it is easy or worth it.

      They change about every 12 years or so, and transitions take about 3 years.

      Any faster than that risks consumer confidence and brand integrity.

      We have at least 7 years

    13. I’m also quite impressed by how smoothly we were able to move from x86 to ARM in just a few years. I don’t even remember using Rosetta.

    14. I’m glad we can finally talk about it without saying the word “silicon” in every other sentence. They were obnoxious about that when the M1 was fresh.

    15. But how good is its hardware based VM support? AFAIK, it’s still not as complete as Intel, or even AMD.

      …..did it???, because for example, the main complain with the Mac Pro is that you can’t use the pcie ports for GPUs like the RTX A series or the other AI focused GPUs

      It really didnt change anything other than build the walled garden of pure ideology higher. Apple is in deep trouble, like all companies that believe their own myth.

    18. my only gripe with the transition is losing boot camp support which i think is a godsend sometimes as someone who daily drives both windows and macos (i mean it could still technically be possible with arm windows but still sadly no incentive for apple to do anything about it)

      otherwise i would’ve been fully committed to switching to an m series laptop by now
