Entry level RCMP constables pull in roughly $10K more than a private in the CAF, and the RCMP is still challenged to hire. Throwing money at the problem isn’t always the solution.
On the bright side of USA encroaching on our sovereignty- people are finally realizing what a disaster our miltary is
on the no so bright side, it’s going to be 10+ years until we have a functional military and I’m not sure the world is going to wait around for us
Leave it to Canada for any government process to be drawn out and back logged even though government is bloated with workers. It just makes it worse
I went into the recruiting centre on Nov 17, 1981 and was on my way to Cornwallis for basic training on Jan 21, 1982. The recruiting process has gotten so convoluted, people see it as a quality of the organization and opt to take another career path.
It isn’t just the military, it is all federal government hiring. They all require a security clearance and there just isn’t enough people to do a back ground check in a timely manner. To compound this, if any potential recruit is born outside Canada it can take up to 18 months longer due to a foreign service not responding.
It is important to realize that we need trustworthy people as we send them all over the world and they will be representing Canada.
I worked in recruiting from 2009 – 2012, it was a mess then and due to government bureaucracy it has only gotten worse.
The standard CAF recruiting process is to make excellent candidates so frustrated with the delays and inefficiencies that they give up and get a job elsewhere. It is very efficient at screening and removing good people.
That is no exaggeration — I know a doctor who applied for the primary reserves after retiring from the reg force with an outstanding career and two tours to Afghanistan. It took him well over a year and he had to resubmit the same paperwork several times. Eventually he just treated it as a sort of experiment or hobby to see how painful the CAF could make it.
Another excellent candidate waited months for an interview but was contacted on the day of that interview to say that it was cancelled and she shouldn’t attend. A member who knows the system told her to attend anyway — she was interviewed and accepted…
Recruiting is filled with clowns who could not finish a shift at a gas station without setting the place on fire.
The issue with recruitment is the security clearance and then instructors.
They replaced the security clearance system with a newer one (Gambit) and instructor pay is supposed to incentive more people into helping to teach.
But the problem we have now is experienced people are leaving and taking their experience with them.
So now you got people coming out of their QL5s and going right back in to teach with zero experience.

Took me over 2 years to get into the military, but that was in 1988. I could have been in within months, if I took their offer for combat arms or some Navy trades. But I held out for Air Force and a specific trade.
It’s not just how long it takes. It is also the skills that are required for the ones willing to pursue a military career. Not everyone is physically and psychologically fit for this. Many do realize, after they start training, that army is not for them…
Wasn’t that long for me, started the process in August and got offers in October/November of the same year. This was last year, maybe it’s gotten worse?
A bump in pay MIGHT help? If I took my trade Into the military if take an over 40% pay cut. Nah.
Maybe cutting down on the rampant sexual violence would help
