A lot of gold is illegally mined in the CAR (Congo) and made into jewelry or mixed with legal gold so it is laundered and shipped to Switzerland to be stamped and approved

I used to know a guy in Rwanda who bought gold from the DRC, melted it into gold bars and then traveled with it to the UAE each week. The traceability was pretty much zero, which is how end users ultimately want it to be. It was very sad to see.
