Even Rand Paul is saying this is a stupid idea. This is really the guy they want to publicly attack?

      >“I’m not,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said when asked whether she is comfortable with the expansion of the probe. “He is protected by the speech and debate clause.”

Useless as usual hiding behind the speech and debate clause. What he said was the fucking truth and should be reinforced, not questioned.

      >Senate Republicans are growing increasingly uneasy with the Pentagon’s investigation into Sen. [Mark Kelly ](https://thehill.com/people/mark-kelly/)(D-Ariz.) after Defense Secretary [Pete Hegseth ](https://thehill.com/people/pete-hegseth/)announced his office is escalating its probe into him.

      >The Defense Department [announced Monday](https://thehill.com/policy/defense/5650587-trump-hegseth-kelly-investigation/) the review of Kelly has risen to an “official Command Investigation,” intensifying the feud between the two sides over Kelly’s role in a video he and other congressional Democrats made to remind service members of their duty to disobey illegal orders.

      >The news has also given a number of Republicans pause as they question whether this is a prudent decision by the Pentagon against one of their colleagues.

      >“I think it’s a terrible idea,” Sen. [Rand Paul ](https://thehill.com/people/rand-paul/)(R-Ky.) said.

      >Paul was one of five Senate GOP members who expressed reservations about the Hegseth-led investigation into Kelly, a retired Navy captain.

      >Kelly has been under fire by the administration for nearly a month after he, Sen. [Elissa Slotkin ](https://thehill.com/people/elissa-slotkin/)(D-Mich.) and Democratic Reps. [Jason Crow ](https://thehill.com/people/jason-crow/)(Colo.), [Chris Deluzio ](https://thehill.com/people/chris-deluzio/)(Pa.), Maggie Goodlander (N.H.) and [Chrissy Houlahan ](https://thehill.com/people/chrissy-houlahan/)(Pa.) appeared in the video that set off the series of comments.

      >Trump also called for the execution of the half-dozen lawmakers — a remark he walked back.

    4. I can’t believe that repeating something that is in the UMCJ is going to be investigated. You have to think this is truly to stop military officers from objecting to orders.

This is fucked, GOP only gets “uneasy” when the spotlight turns on their own mess. Accountability hits different then.

    6. FFS why are we all pretending here? Everyone with a brain knew Trump was going to go full-on dictator, and House/Senate are just watching passively. Such bullshit.

    7. curiousbydesign on

I hope the witch hunt turns Kelly into a 2028 Presidential Candidate. Come on! Let the hate flow!

    8. Trump will make Kelly a bigger hero of the people with all this. Please proceed Pete and help Kelly make you look like an even bigger loser on the world stage.

“This is all a bunch of bullshit, and the reason why, I think, is because this is just about sending a message to retired service members, active duty service members, government employees: Do not speak out against this president, or there will be consequences,” [Kelly] said.“

      Yes. Entirely. Perfectly on point.

And these Republicans… when asked, they’ll say it’s a bad idea but stop going any further. Which is to say, they know this is wrong, unconstitutional, petty, pointless, and can even backfire down the road. But are they calling it out? No. Because they’re are spineless enablers.

They have to be stopped (political, whatever) because they cannot stop themselves. They cannot stand up for what’s right even when they know what’s right.

If you’re a Democrat senator, how do you look at the other side and see anything but a complicit coward? These are allegedly your colleagues, your countrymen, your friends in some circles – and they’re not standing up for you saying a fact? I don’t understand how you could look at a person the same way after this.

Another heap of taxpayers‘ money wasted on a probe that is ridiculous to begin with. That’s not what I pay taxes for.

    12. Thank you for elevating the future president even further on the national stage.

GOP senators rn: surprised Pikachu face after spending 4 years cheering ‘lock her up’ flash mobs and now the fire’s licking their own retired aviator colleague

Kelly: You duty to the Constitution/people supersedes any commanding officer including the POTUS.
Trump: He can’t do that! That’s super mega sedition treason!
      Enlisted: Hm?

As their not lawyer I advise that they keep drawing attention to this. They’re not going to really convince any one in the military. They’re all just thinking „Why does Trump want me break my oath? Why are they going after Kelly?“. Honorific cultures also love it when you go after respected members. Especially those who are reminding everyone of their (all members) honor/duty. Please keep putting this respected vet on blast reminding them that they don’t serve a king. It’s not undermining the regime’s goals at all.

Military culture is specifically designed like a cult where they worship the Constitution and democracy. That doctrine is practically beat into them from basic and repeated till it drives them nanners. Not adhering to or questioning the doctrine can get you thrown out. Social status is rewarded for adherence and sacrifice in name of the doctrine. They have compounds (bases) where the clergy (officers) control your access to shelter and food. Everyone around you is in the cult and has family who works for the cult. If you’re born into a military family you’re indoctrinated from birth. When you imagine the military as a church the culture makes way more sense. Of course there are varying levels of belief and adherence but like any church there is zealots. Those zealots terrify the shit out of the regime.

It’s pretty wild that GOP senators are finally ‚uneasy‘ only after the Pentagon escalates and investigation into an actual decorated veteran and sitting senator instead of, you know, the endless real crises out there.

    16. Adventurous_Test_296 on

The GOP has lost its way in both houses. Here’s the best evidence of the fact. When unskilled, ill-behaved schmucks like Hegseth, and Vance go after extremely skilled, and competent men like Senator Kelly, it serves to show the level of desperation in the party. Terrible display.

    17. I hope they try to throw the book at him so they can have another opportunity to faceplant spectacularly, which there can be no doubt that they will.

    18. My God, could this really be the return to reality? So unexpected. I figured it would easily be another 10 to 15 years before the madness of the GOP finally played out and was destroyed by common sense.

If this becomes the public spectacle that the white house wants it to, it’s going to be the launching point for Kelly 2028. The dude isn’t an idiot. He his colleagues were very deliberate with what they said and how they said it. They’re going to run circles around Hegseth

    20. “We’re creating a precedent that everybody should expect could be used against them,” one GOP senator told The Hill.”

      What comes around goes around.

    21. muffledvoice on

MAGA’s self-destruction is built into their system. They’re going to try to bully and “investigate” everybody until even many diehard republicans realize Trump and his toxic administration are bad for the country.

    22. xoSweetCherriesxo on

GOP getting cold feet over this is basically peak American politics: cheer leading for aggressive, unprecedented tactics until your own guy is on the receiving end, then it’s suddenly ‚maybe we shouldn’t do that?‘ Kelly didn’t break any law by echoing what every military textbook says about refusing illegal orders, and now the Pentagon’s turning it into a full command investigation. That’s exactly the kind of abuse of power that should make everyone uneasy, regardless of party.

    23. Polkawillneverdie17 on

I’d really love for any Republican out there to try and justify this one. Explain to me please how this isn’t the government going after someone for their legal speech.
