      From my experience this data seems pretty wrong. Also what trains? High speed, Intercity, Regional, Local? Because this would change things dramatically.

      In Switzerland we have trains stationned at the border to Germany always at the ready because they essentially already know that trains that come in from Germany are often late so they need to have replacements ready to ensure punctuality.

      Not sure if that’s true at the Italian border too.

      Deutsche Bahn is not on time hardly ever. Within five or ten minutes usually, but not on time. Same goes for Italy, especially closer to Amalfi coast in my experience. TrenItalia has lines running through Salerno and while I’ve never had one be too late they’re not as reliable as they should be. Still way better than buses in south Italy, good god they are horrible.

      What happened to Germany? I thought DB and Germans in general were known for their punctuality? When did that change?

      Purely anecdotally this does definitely check out. German trains almost make British ones look military precise.

      Is there any thing in particular which explains these trends? Like why so much worst in Germany and Italy?

      Is it not so that a lot of the delays on Deutsche Bahn are due to a mass maintenance project after many years of neglect? I have gone there a few times from the Netherlands, but then I have taken early trains or night trains because I have had the time. One time, it was 2 hours delayed on its way. For example, the ICE was supposed to do this side line detour to stop in a city before it would go back to the main line. But because there was construction on the tracks from the Netherlands to Germany, it could not go by this city.

      So, naturally, I would have said to passanger long in advance that the train would not stop at the station during this period. But you know what they did instead? The train continued on the main line, then stopped for 15 minutes. Then they drove back up the other „exit“ from that town. So the train then drove back again. And then we were stuck at this station again for a long time, before it turned around and continued its journey back to the main line and continued the journey. Of course, since the timetable was scrwed up, there were many stops underway, as it now had to wait for other trains etc. This was really late, but holy shit, I could tell people were NOT happy.
