Irish Gardaí (our police force), do not routinely carry firearms either, only specialised units do.

Ireland only has special armed units. Not many. We are only trialing tasers at present.

Putting yourself in situations with criminals and potentially risking your life on a daily basis and not having a firearm with you is not the smartest thing to be doing in my opinion.

I’m glad only some highly trained British police are armed (ex NI). There is a really poor culture of corruption, racism, sexism, and even predatory behaviour in many forces, but expecialy the Met Police in London. These types of individuals being armed is unthinkable.

Police in uk do have firearms. Not all of them but they most definitely can and will bring it when necessary.

**Police Shootings Comparison**
The UK has far fewer fatal police shootings than its neighbors. In 2024, for example:
* **England and Wales:** 2 fatal shootings.
* **Germany:** 22 fatal shootings—the highest since 1990—mostly involving interventions with individuals in mental health crises.
* **France:** Historically higher rates; between 2020–2022, France recorded 107 deaths in police operations (the highest in the EU in absolute terms), of which over one-third were gunshots

That’s why you see those embarrassing videos on the net where British cops can’t even handle and arrest criminals.

I flew out of Glasgow the same day Manchester airport got terror attacked. Seeing Scottish police with freakin‘ MP5s at the airport shut my smart mouth up real quick. When the UK cops get armed, they get armed.

This is wrong. Ireland doesn’t have guns for police.
They only have guns in special cases.

Maybe the cops in the UK, Norway and Iceland work like John Wick. With a pencil.
To be honest though, in the movie Hot Fuzz we see that the police’s strongest weapon is their book where they write in whatever a person of interest is doing.
In Cyprus regular patrol police officers do not carry firearms.

Outdated map. Norwegian police has basically been on and off routinely armed since 2014 (depending on terror threat level) and are permanently armed since July 2025.
