      Why would the sun set earlier in Stockholm than in Helsinki when Stockholm is closer to the equator? Or even Iceland. I don’t get it.

      Winter solstice always reminds me how different life feels depending on where you live. Sunset can change a whole country’s mood.

      I already want to kill myself when it’s already dark around 17:00 but bruh, some countries are so much worse. Never had imagined/realized there was a 1h difference in Berlin or Warsaw.

      Even within The Netherlands there’s a half our difference between the most southern and northern most part.

      Just a side note, but the earliest sunset of the year is *not* on the day of winter solstice. It’s actually about 2 weeks earlier, on 11 or 12 of December (depends on your latitude). And the latest sunrise is about 2 weeks *after* the solstice.

      The shortest day of the year is on the solstice, yes, but that is not the day of the earliest sunset/latest sunrise. I never learned about it in school and was fairly surprised it works that way when I found out a few years ago.

      The reason for that is (mainly) the axial tilt of the Earth and the fact that the Earth is closest to the Sun in January, so currently it travels more distance on its orbit every day than average, while the rotational speed of our planet is constant. This in turn causes the solar noon to be „dragged forward“ a minute or so every day, causing this effect. Exactly the opposite thing happens in the summer (latest sunset is *after* the summer solstice).

For those interested in exact times for your location, I recommend the website [Gaisma](https://www.gaisma.com/en/location/warsaw.html) (change the location to your city). You can see that in 1 month, the day in Warsaw will be 1 hour longer than today, even though the sunrise will be just 10 minutes later than now. The majority of the „day gain“ will be in the evening, since the sun has been setting later every day since December 11.

      EDIT 2: You can even use [this API](https://api.sunrise-sunset.org/json?lat=51.00000&lng=17.00000&date=2025-12-21) (plug in your coordinates and date) for ultra precise times down to the second.

      Sadly we get punished during the summer with sun only down for a few hours, we need to enjoy „winter“ while we can ;-;

      An interesting situation exists between Poland and Belarus. Belarus uses UTC+3 all year, whereas Poland changes its time: UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer. In winter, the difference between Poland and Belarus is two hours.
      There are two cities: the Belarusian city of Brest and the Polish city of Biała Podlaska. The distance between these cities is around 40 kilometers. I met a friend who lived in Brest and studied in Biała Podlaska. When his first lesson started at 9 a.m., he left home at 10 a.m. The return journey was more painful.

      My day here in Aalborg in northern Denmark: sunrise 08:58 – 09:04, daylight 09:04 – 15:34, sunset 15:34 – 15:40. (Source suncalc.net)

      Roughly 6.5 hours of daylight … today again filtered through fog and full cloud cover.

      Using sunset instead of day length makes this map for reasons that have already been mentioned. (day length is not symmetrical relative to mean noon, and change over the year).

      Positions on the same latitude have the same day length, but sunset vary one hour within one 15˚ timezone, and more in vesteren Europe.

      There are at least three timezones on the map.

      Ha, finally the proof that I was right when I was telling my Berlin friends that though Oslo has more night, it’s not that much more noticeable at Christmas. You have a sunny lunch, but by the time to drink your espresso, it’s night. Give of take 30 min.

      I remember visiting Helsinki late December, it was really depressive for me, so little sunlight, even compared to Nizhny Novgorod where I grew up.

      I really hate seeing it’s getting darker while I know I’ll stop working only in 1 or 2 hours
