    1. Whilst I understand that Eastern Europeans have infinitely more reasons to take a hard stance on Russia than us, it’s going a bit overboard lately with accusations of other EU member states being Russian assets.

I know everyone has been calling out De Wever specifically, but with full parliamentary backing across all parties, it is in fact calling out Belgium as a whole for being a Russian asset.

This type of rhetoric simply should not happen between EU member states, especially if one is simply raising legitimate concerns before entering unchartered territory by confiscating assets.

pretty clear to me that there is a highly organised social media constellation of accounts Ukrainian government uses to try and push things through same as the Russians. toomas might not be part of it but they cluster around him and others

    3. Th biggest concurrent to Euroclear holding the assets is clear steam (DE). I am not surprised to see vor der leyen being so pushy, imagine how many shady clients will move from Euroclear to Clearstream once the assets are seized. We should support our gov. on this one

Seeing how Belgium was portrayed in most foreign media over this issue just reaffirms my belief media is inherently biased. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. Just like my opinion on the matter ofcourse.

Interesting following these updates in relation to Belgian domestic politics vs the EU/NATO community in Brussels. In Belgium overall, the decision seems to be broadly popular. In the EU Quarter of Brussels, highly unpopular (along with the mainstream in much of northern/central Europe).

If you don’t want to share the financial risk by signing a mutual coverage insurance incase it inevitably goes wrong then you have to STFU.

None of these big mouth countries would throw their own country under the bus.

Russian asset my ass. Belgian tax payers would’ve had to pay the price and we can’t even afford our own countries debt.

    7. Is anyone out there actually willing to understand the nuances of this complex geopolitical and economical situation? Seems like you’re either some far right Russian asset, or a naive Euro-hugger.

While the reality is: Well, the EU keeps on funding Ukraine. The EU keeps control of Russian assets as leverage in peace negotiations meanwhile sending profits to Ukraine. We can still confiscate the Russian assets in the future. Trust in the EU financial system is not completely broken.

Another reality is: the EU is a union, it’s not a federal state. So you get compromises like this: nobody really happy, nobody completely fckd.

On the other hand: I cannot imagine how daily life feels like, knowing you are a small former Sovjet country neighboring Russia, seeing what they do in Ukraine.

    8. Interesting how Eu members and taxpayers now all have to pay for this grant themselves (while the aggressors frozen money was an option) and all silly and sheepish Flemish people applaud this.

That is exactly how right wing neo liberal populism works. Make their solution feel like it is the most “reasonable” and “the most careful” option. With a bit of idiotic “Gallic pride” in the mix.

I think the Kremlin and the oligarchs are having the best time.

Yeah, how weird that a country right on the border with a country already at war with their own neighbor is unhappy about that ? They’re probably the next one on the list.

I mean, of course, different countries would have different opinions based on their own different situation and interests? Can we stop polemicizing about EVERYTHING ffs ?

They’re just hurting their own case. If you can’t differentiate between a “Russian agent” and a prime minister with concerns about seizing another country’s assets without a legal precedent, you’re not thinking clearly.
