He should have invited him in and made him tea.
Bit of a misleading headline. He wasn’t an intruder. He broke into the guys car. Killing someone for that is obviously way over the top. An intruder in your house is a very different matter.
I mean that’s outrageously over the top. He could’ve just shouted at him and the young fella probably would’ve legged it.
Unpopular opinion on here probably, but I think this is well deserved. Going at the man with a knife when he’s breaking into cars (and yes I’ve had cars at my home broken into so I’m aware how shit it is) is a disproportionate response.
If he’d broken into the home? Different matter, but outside the house is where this happened so the court got this right.

It was probably a moment of madness for the person who stabbed the thief. Things happen in the heat of the moment and the sentence is proportionate to the crime. As others have pointed out better to shout and call insurance. People should use reasonable force, if he broke the lads arm that would have been proportionate maybe? I am talking about in the context of defending your property whether it be car or house

Leaving your house with a knife to stab someone that is breaking into your car is disproportionate.
He was outside and robbing his car, Running out with a knife and leaping to plung it into their chest is insane behaviour. You can’t defend your property like that unless they attack you
He wouldn’t have gotten stabbed to death if he wasn’t robbing someone else’s things.

He could have picked up a hurl or a golf club and gone to town on yer mans legs and hands and be still laughing about it down the pub tonight. Alas.
If he’d grabbed a hurley then the young lad would, most likely, be alive and the property owner not facing a conviction for killing someone.

Breaking into someone’s home / vehicle or stealing their possessions is one of the most egregious forms of invading one’s privacy.
Maybe if there were tangible consequences- be that sentencing or criminals actually facing potential harm; will we see a more responsible society. No to guns in the home by the way.
Beating should have been enough, even Garda wouldn’t mind that.
Although if this would have been a home invasion I would see no issue with that.

Good, fatally stabbing someone for trying to steal a car is American shit we do not need. If you must intervene, yell or give him a hidin. Otherwise call the Garda and insurer.

A 20-years-old is far from „a boy“. He is (was) a man that was breaking into cars, deliberatively.

He broke into a BMW in a garden and he was stabbed to death because of it. The family were not in danger, he was not in danger, but he saw someone in his BMW, ran out with a knife, and stabbed him in the chest.

The DPP need to publish a clear framework of what is acceptable in defending your home and belongings. It would be a blood hard thing to do though
Running out and stabbing a robber seems very disproportionate but how was the defendant supposed to know the deceased wasn’t armed with a knife himself..is he supposed to ask him before he picks up a knife himself? Cos if he goes to tackle the fella even armed with a hurl and the fella has a knife he’s fucked himself
We unfortunately live in a society where you’re better off letting the criminals take what they want as the potential repercussions of getting involved can be life changing or even fatal

Was the robber armed?
By default he was likely carrying tools that could have been weaponsied (crowbars and large pointed scredrivers).
Was there any element of self-defence?
So he’s to protect the life of someone who has no regard for the law while simultaneously trying to protect himself abiding to the law. The government would rather he got stabbed himself
