Because it will just fill up with traffic.
Why not continue that on, build down the M7 and up to the M1? Build a ring road for your ring road. And then when that gets backed up, build another ring road outside that.
Building more ring roads further and further out from the M50 is probably the only way we’ll eventually get a motorway between Limerick and Cork.
Hard to imagine that road not having a toll

Induced demand will see it fill up. The solutions to our problems don’t lie in more roads, they lie in alternatives so that the roads we do have work better.

The M50 isn’t the problem. Spatial planning Dublin and its hinterland over the last 50 years is the problem.
The issue is all roads leading to Dublin, they need way more rail and a subway. and to divert the population away from Dublin, build up a major city in the midlands

I’m sure I saw somewhere that they have studied the possibility of an outer radial route. But the M50 would still be overloaded. The recommendation was to complete the M50 and transform it from a “C” to a complete ring road. That would allow traffic to move North and South over two directions (West and East).
Not a dig at you op, but we’ve seen time and again, that more roads is not the way to resolve congestion as it ALWAYS leads to more cars on the road
The only way to remove cars from the roads is to offer viable, more convenient, more cost effective, sustainable modes of transport, whether they be through road space reallocation (bus lanes, bike lanes, paths, filtered permeability) or new off-road infrastructure (rail, metro).
And yes, that includes extensive use of the „stick“ and not just the „carrot“ as one will not be enough without the other
This is the long term govt strategy as per the [Demand Management Strategy](https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-transport/press-releases/new-national-demand-management-strategy-aims-to-reduce-congestion-and-free-up-our-cities-and-towns/) but there’s a lot of politically unpalatable actions in it (congestion charges, parking levies, removal of on street parking etc) so its likely to fail and congestion will remain an ongoing issue for decades to come

Because it will cost a fortune and still not solve tue problem. The more road you build the more cars it will attract. They just need to get on and build a dependable transport system.
It should really be further out, NAAS >> Maynooth >> Dunshauglin >> Ashbourne >> North Dublin and connect to M1
Nobody is driving from Mullingar to the M50 to go to Navan or vice versa
The problem is 100% North <-> South Dublin and Airport traffic

The real solution is building good enough public transport to get thousands of cars off the road.
More roads and bigger roads mean more traffic. There may be some merit in this for different reasons, but to sort out our traffic issues, I believe we need something like 50% more buses. They shouldn’t be profit making, they should be providing a service. Run at a loss, get people where they need to on time and get everything moving.
A few thoughts,
You would have to build a bridge across the Liffey, at a technically difficult point.
You would sterilise a massive parcel of land, much of which is earmarked for housing development.
You would induce more traffic on to the road network so any benefit would short lived.
It would cost a fortune as a lot of the land you indicated is zoned for development and therefore very valuable, on top of the cost of the road and the bridge.
The people already living in the m4 to m3 would not like it.
An easier solution would be to invest in public transport and give people an alternative to the car.
Is there anything to be said for building another road?

They should run a monorail along the m50 with spines of metro / train at every exit running from city centre outwards.
Nah. It’s just repeating the mistakes of the past. Just need to get rid of the cars that don’t NEED to drive on the M50. How do you do that?
Congestion charging, proper park and rides, metro, bus connects etc… Also, more density inside the M50. No need for high rise, but 5/6 storey apartment blocks, connected with proper bike lanes, as a lot of people inside the M50 don’t NEED to drive either, they do so either cos it’s handy or cos cycling is too dangerous/hostile/noisy.
Why is it too dangerous/hostile? Cars.
The solutions are there we just need political courage to sort it not ANOTHER ring road.

Most major cities have more than one circular motorway. Madrid has the M30, M40, M50
London has multiple as well, Dublin has expanded to the point where we need another one I feel.

The solution to traffic congestion is not more roads, it’s better public transport. Things like taking a half a lifetime to build a single metro line or adding to the Luas at an average speed of 1.7km per annum since construction started in 2001 might be contributing to our problems.
A better solution would be to build MetroWest

So you want to build a road cutting through St Catherine’s park?
First off that would be devastating for Leixlip and Lucan. But also there was a bypass suggested to go through that park to allow more houses to be built and there was uproar from locals.
Tl;dr: Nobody wants these roads built in their areas.
