Anywhere else would have been worst to hit, since the twin hull and ballast tanks in the front and center would have absorbed a good bit of the shockwave.

The rear end on the other hand has some delicate bits relative to the rest of the submarine, like sealings, rudders, the propeller. All of those don’t like to be bend and under sudden high pressure.

Even though it didn’t sink, the impact on the propeller prevents it from being silent. Well done.

    3. Submarines are incredibly fragile.

Built to withstand enormous forces and pressures, they are tested and maintained to the highest standards.

I would suggest there will be damage, how severe, time may tell if there are leaks from the military/civilian repair agencies. But we’ll probably never know and she’ll likely be put in to „routine dry dock maintenance“ for years to save face and cover the truth as „non-drone attack, age related defects“.

What I can say, without dry docking and evaluation, this sub is out of action. Even towing it will require in-water survey, and repairs if necessary, which is costly and time consuming. It will also be vulnerable to further attack if she needs to be moved to a different facility.

Complete destruction isn’t always necessary, taking equipment out of the game is still a success.

Apart from anything, it is sitting much lower in the water than previous, quite possibly on the sea bed. Clearly a hull breach and serious flooding…

    5. Looks a lot like shadow from the docks too. I’m surprised Ukraine didn’t send more, that area is target-rich

    6. Oh well, we deeply sorry that our first usage of experimental weapon missed by 12 meters and only done catastrophic damage instead of full destruction. We can promise we’ll improve in the future.

They just destroyed a newish 3-5 years old corvette near the Kerch bridge as well. Slava Ukraini!

Edit: sorry, this news was from 2 years ago.

It appears to be lower in the water but otherwise I can’t tell any difference

    9. These pictures look exactly the same to me. Not sure where you see severe damage.

This was not a direct hit. Wish it was, but it wasnt. Hopeful posts and comments does not lend any credibility to the community, we need to be objective. The sub looks lower in the water than the other sub because the dock is casting a shadow on it. Look at shadows, look how low the sun is on the horizon, shadows are very long. Dock is casting a shadow and is covering some of the sub. Its probably damaged, maybe the prop is fucked, maybe there is some structural damage/cracking – but it was not a direct hit. Be honest with the facts.

Even if it completely missed it would have affected the pressure hull integrity and made it unsuitable for diving. However I’m pretty sure Russian command don’t really care for this type of thing so will send it to sea if possible anyways. If it hasn’t taken on water already, then it definitely will when it dives.

This is the same photo that has been altered. Look at the positions of, well, literally everything and all the shadows. Only the sub has been darkened.

    13. Top picture looks fake. The lower half with the red oxide/antifouling paint looks transparent and the rear dive plane overlaps the quayside as well.

    14. Murky_Foundation_911 on

Lol the explosion that close to the dock would send immense shockwaves through the water.

When depth charges explode, it isn’t the blast that does damage. It’s the shockwave through the water.

    15. SC_W33DKILL3R on

Better hitting at the rear where the armour is less and a direct route to the inner pressure hull.

    16. submariner-mech on

Gotta hand it to them, an explosion like that should’ve blown out the shaft seal (at a minimum) which should have led to catastrophic flooding in the motor room… so either its a pretty tough som bitch, or the crew was able to inflate the emergency seal and control internal flooding… would love to get more info

    17. The biggest ‘tell’ to me is that the RuZZianZ almost immediately put out counter information. The video was taken (assuming it’s not an old picture or video) and in a way that would clearly NOT show the tail end of the submarine. Nothing to see here!

That tells me the submarine got damaged. How and how much are two entirely different questions.

    18. popcorn0617 on

Submarines can sit lower than others for many reasons. Youre looking at a few inches of draft difference between the two. The aft end of the ship takes very little change for water level to come closer to the hatch.
Source: me, a submariner for 9 years.

I have no doubt internal equipment and pipes were FUCKED on that ship and their rudder is probably inop right now. I highly doubt the hull was breached in any way though. They may have slight leakage through the shaft seals but that is easily handled and hardly a real issue

    19. This image does a really poor job actually showing what you want to show.

HI Sutton did a video breakdown of the attack and clearly showed the exact location of the hit and even a cut-away diagram showing what compartments would have been destroyed.

You say they could have hit a better spot, but they really couldn’t have. The only potentially better option would have been the other side of the sub, which contains the torpedo bay, but they couldn’t have known if it was loaded at that time, so the best value attack is the engine compartments, which is exactly what they hit.
