Every death in custody is a tragedy, but we do have a real problem of governments that have failed to invest for decades in new correctional facilities, and that lack of suitable facilities makes tragic incidents like this more likely not less.
Not having sufficient facilities means double bunking, leading to conflict between inmates, it means limited educational programming, and enrichment activities, and a lack of suitable medical care. The Ontario government does not have anywhere near enough jail capacity, with the announced expansions only taking them back to 100% capacity, using current bail practices, which most Canadians already feel are not appropriate, and a current population levels.

This is all case by case basis. Yes some people are mentally ill but that’s also a vague term that’s easily thrown around. Do they have primary psychosis or did they do drugs? Do they have depression or anxiety like many people? Why does their medical history warrant innocent people becoming victims?
Many people commit crimes because they are full out psychopaths with zero remorse for their actions. Not every criminal needs a mental health intervention. Some fully know what they’re doing and enjoy the damage they cause.
That’s why you need jail.
