My father’s quote: „Putin achieved what Ukrainian nationals could not achieve — to wake up Ukrainian national sentiment“.

Now the same thing happens on the EU level.

    2. More money for army, less personel in Europe. I wonder if that means invasion to South America or repression of US citizens… I’m sure it will not be China or Russia…

    3. badstuffaround on

Sounds like America is doing things I 100% think they will regret. Decrease presence in Europe now and lose influence forever. No take backs.

    4. whatever-13337 on

Just close Ramstein and spangdahlem. Let them loose their influence completely.

    5. This really should come as no surprise, the „Pivot to Asia“ has been the policy since the Obama Administration.

Notably, per the article, the Indo-Pacific and Arctic commands appear to be the only regional groupings that are not being consolidated into a larger overarching command structure.

If he success in putting a bunch of „yes men“ on key military positions, I feel like how the next elections may is irrelevant. The military will do whatever Trump and his entourage demand.

Europe contains some of the most economically and technically advanced countries on the planet. They shouldn’t need the US to babysit them.

    8. epicness_personified on

I think it’s mad the US is willingly giving up so much soft and hard power so freely.

    9. This shift has been a long time coming

      1) I think the US will regret losing its influence in Europe. I’ve wanted independent european defence for a long time. And for a long time the key obstacle was US ambitions to withdraw while maintaining influence. Have your cake and eat it too. Seems like they are going to eat it now.

      2) This change has been a long time coming, but boy did US citizens get a rough hand if Hegseth is executing it.

Makes sense. They want to shift their focus on containing China. As much as Europeans think this is about Trump; it is not. US’s empire is being threatened by China and a war in China’s home turf is not something US can manage while preserving a huge military presence all over the globe. It needs to reduce commitments elsewhere and shift focus to China.

Europe can easily handle itself against Russia. Not sure what all the crying is about. You all sound like 10 years old kids crying because their candy was taken away.

    11. China is obviously a much bigger concern to American power than Russia is. Nothing but logical for the US to relatively reduce its presence in Europe

    12. oldhellenyeller on

This pivot has been in the works for a long time. Several US Presidents have emphasized how important it is for Europe to get serious about defending itself.

    13. Europe doesn’t need a nation of 300 million to protect 500 million form a country with 146 million people

There’s no possibility ware Russia wins a direct non nuclear war with all of Europe and if a nuclear war does happen it becomes a problem for the rest of the world including isolationist America

Trump is only going to be in office for another 3 years and next year he’s likely to lose one of the houses we in Europe shouldn’t burn our bridges with America but a reset in our relationship is overdue Europe need to be independent of America we don’t need to be involved in conflicts in the Middle East on behalf of Isreal or America and we certainly don’t need to be involved in a conflict in the Pacific Ocean

Putin is 73 he is not going to live forever and honestly if I was Russia today I’d be more concerned about China then Europe

Yes Europe needs to be strong militarily and economically but we can only do this if we are free form America

    14. Putin’s investment in Trump finally pays off. He must be so chuffed right now. He’s managed to considerably weaken their strongest adversary.

As for Europe, it will be fine, with or without America. This will one make it stronger.

    15. true_jester on

Great. Don’t forget to leave Rammstein. The US doctrine has always been to NOT defend Europe in case of a big conflict. NATO are just fodder for the toppling of countries. This is the latest 25 years at least in a nutshell.

Stupidity in a blue suit ready to dismantle US’s position in the world…

    17. GrannyFlash7373 on

DUMB move, if this country goes to WAR, it will need all the well seasoned expertise it can muster. Otherwise , we LOSE.

    18. The pivot to Asia away from Europe started ages ago and people are acting like this is a new idea. No, it was just slightly fast tracked

    19. > shrink presence in Europe

This is what the European left has been wanting for a long time. Finally it’s happening.

    20. White_Immigrant on

Are they finally going to leave the UK so we can have political and economic independence?

    21. DriverGlittering6639 on

Of course the US wants to decrease its presence in Europe, Europe is about to go to war with Russia. Hegseth didn’t sign on for that. He signed up for the largest navy ship in the world going to the Caribbean to blow up speedboats. Yeah, you see that boys! Total destruction of that 30 footer! This calls for a Bud Light!

    22. lilbittygoddamnman on

Isn’t that a Vladimir Putin wet dream. On the behalf of most people in America, I apologize by how our government is treating you.

    23. Why would Ukraine now agree to security „guarantees“ from America? This offer of an „Article 5“ like promise is utter bullshit.

    24. Combined with trump declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction, and venezuela havin huge oil reserves, i think they mihht get iraqd

    25. Probably 2/3 of all people commenting in here are non-western people who are anti-European and anti-USA. Keep that in mind

    26. SophonParticle on

I support this but not for the same reasons trump does.

Also, Europeans, what is stopping you from becoming the USE, United States of Europe.

Why not unite under one federal government where each European country becomes equivalent to a US state but in the USE.

    27. Ambitious_Parfait385 on

Russian FSB money well spent on Trump and the GOP. Trump and crew shrinking NATO and screwing our allies. Who would have ever thought our republic would end like this.
