Putting aside the Ferris wheel, the Casinos, and unique hotel plans which are whatever…I think the worst thing about Fords proposal is that Ford has once again decided to not give Public Transit the proper attention it deserves.
He wants more people to go to the Niagara region as a tourist destination, but then the Go Train is off in the suburbs and there is no direct connection to actually get to the Falls, let alone Clifton Hill, or the Downtown area.
And it’s even worse once you factor in the Airport. There is absolutely no connection between the Airport and the existing Go Network, let alone the bare bones Niagara Bus system.
They want to attract tourists from all over the world, but who the hell is going to go to Vegas North in Niagara Falls, just to be dumped off in a corn field and need to drive 30 minutes past fields and suburbs just to get to the actual falls, your hotel and the attractions?
A proper plan here would be to go fund an LRT that starts at the Go Station and then runs up the waterfront to the Falls, with a second line going downtown. And if Ford was smart, he could make it an elevated LRT that gives a view of the falls in the process, or at the very least connects to his Gadgetbahn pod style system he wants to build in the park.
Hell, if he was really smart he’d then go reappprove the Windsor to Toronto HSR line, expand it with a connection to Detroit, build a spur to Niagara Region and then use it to pull even more tourism from the Americans into Canada.
Heck, bring back the Ferry Service connecting Toronto to Niagara, and you now have another tourist attraction, or hell, since Ford likes Casinos so much, make it a large party boat that goes back and forth and serves double duty.
