Basically the pornhub data leak and republicans leadership blackmail and embarrassment will pull these laws… but then again… the Epstein files clearly show frequent customer Trump and nobody has done anything.
Go ahead, ask for my ID, I’ll just fucking stop using the internet for anything but paying bills… I’m not doing this stupid bullshit, every idiot company on the planet seems to have access to all my information at a whim to lose when they please with no repercussions, I just ain’t doing this shit anymore.
This won’t just age-gate kids. It’ll normalize identity checks everywhere, and the data will eventually leak. It always does.
The hilarious part is that the same group of people who wanted/voted/advocated for a nanny state government to make sure that all the OTHER scary dangerous things get taken away from everyone so that no one can get hurt, are the same people who are now crying about this nanny state thing and saying „I didn’t think the leopard I voted for would eat MY face too!“
Maybe they should age-gate online ads, you know, to protect the kids. That’s the only scenario I’d support this.

I feel like it’s not unreasonable to have checks like this if it’s done w/ a reliable 3rd party. For example, something like what Paypal is (or was) for online commerce. I was never a fan of putting my card info everywhere. But Paypal handled the transaction. So I didn’t need to worry about that.
Now, if we could have some sort of centralized ID system similar to that, then okay. Go to a porn site or whatever and it says „Are you 18?“ Authenticate against 3rd party that knows me. The website doesn’t need to know who I am, only that I’m over 18. No personal information, just „Yep, they’re good.“ Secure it, lock it down tight, Bob’s your uncle.

i remember the first time i went on the internet, i was 6 and had to go to a library, it was 1994.
i had an ear infection and cotton balls in both ears.
i was researching about bats.
a literal news crew was filming me use the computer, then came up behind me and asked me what i was doing. i told them, very ineloquently that i was researching bats because i think they are cool.
i barely remember any of this but yeah, good times when you could just research whatever and learn about it and that was mostly what it was for.
