Not sure what is attracting so many people to Houston. You’d have to pay me above $300K to live in that place, and I doubt that’s what people are earning there. Awful city, in every possible way.

    2. Republicans in the NYC metro *insist* the area is losing people because of its tax policies…

I had to look up what on Earth is going on with Charlotte. Most of it is honest increases in density: Mecklenburg County (which holds Charlotte) gained 60% from the 2000 Census to the 2020 Census.

But the other end of the equation is land area. The Charlotte Metro Area is now so huge that in 2023, the Census merged 6 nearby small North Carolina towns into the MSA: Hickory, Lenoir, Morganton, Marion, Shelby, and Albemarle. That brought in another 400,000 or so people.

I did research on nesting birds in Charlotte over the summer. The amount of species in the city has declined significantly since surveys done 15 years ago. Granted, it’s really focused development and not crazy sprawl like Florida, but still interesting to see.

      Amazing city though.

And in the next 25 years, we might begin to see the opposite happen as climate change takes hold. Where storms and fires will make vast areas uninsurable for houses and businesses, and water scarcity sets in

    6. This is a really shallow list of cities. Nothing in Mexico, neither major city in Alberta which are both bigger than many of the cities on here. It has Orlando and Tampa but not Nashville or New Orleans.

    7. Cool that more people want to come live where I’m from. Kind of a badge of honor and validation for my belief that this place is awesome…. But I wouldn’t hate it if we could improve transportation infrastructure to accommodate this influx lol

People are following jobs and wealth. The fastest growing places in the US have State governments willing to slit the throats of those on the bottom of the economy to get ahead.

    9. I just spent the weekend in Charlotte. It just feels so much more modern than almost all other east coast cities. It really has a lot going for it for people looking to relocate.

New Orleans would arguably be the most interesting one here and they haven’t included it

Not by metro area, right? cos there’s no way Houston or Charlotte metros saw it more than DFW metro.

    12. How is Detroit just -2% ? I remember when „exploring abandon buildings in Detroit“ was its own category of Youtube.
