Its so interesting that humans have shaped these bears genome unintentionally.
I cant help but wonder if this story will be repeated with other species as pressures increase from habitat loss.
I wonder what evolutionary pressures have changed humans that we don’t know about.
tl;dr: The bear population in southern and Central Italy has been isolated from the rest of Europe for a couple thousand years now.
Humans killed all the big, aggressive bears leaving the remaining, greatly diminished population more inbred, but on average smaller and more docile.
This is presented as a good thing and a possible solution for other places struggling with increased bear populations due to successful conservation efforts.
