The draft definition is: „Anti-Muslim hostility is engaging in or encouraging criminal acts, including acts of violence, vandalism of property, and harassment and intimidation whether physical, verbal, written or electronically communicated, which is directed at Muslims or those perceived to be Muslims because of their religion, ethnicity or appearance.
„It is also the prejudicial stereotyping and racialisation of Muslims, as part of a collective group with set characteristics, to stir up hatred against them, irrespective of their actual opinions, beliefs or actions as individuals.
„It is engaging in prohibited discrimination where the relevant conduct – including the creation or use of practices and biases within institutions – is intended to disadvantage Muslims in public and economic life.“
This is terrible news when you think the government can’t get worse, then this happens. The timing of this news is also highly questionable, as we are still processing the terrorist attack, which has now been attributed to Islamic State.
Labour really are doing everything they can to make sure Reform wins the next election. Lots of people are going to refuse to vote for a party that brings in blasphemy laws.
Seems a well written definition but –
“including the creation or use of practices and biases within institutions – is intended to disadvantage Muslims in public and economic life”
Could a pro LGBT stance be seen as a bias intended to disadvantage Muslims?
Should probably be added “unless the limitation of which also impacts on other groups such that they themselves become disadvantaged”
Imagine that members of a belief system are literally trying kill you and often succeeding, precisely because that belief system encourages them to, and here Labour are trying to make it illegal for you to say that it’s a bad situation…
Can somebody that understands law tell me what the point of this is and how it affects us? And why is it specific to Islam and not other religions?
This seems … okay.
I’m not fond of Islam but it sounds like we’ll be able to criticise it just fine under these laws.
Maybe I missed something?
Why do we need this? We already have tonnes of anti discrimination laws? I can’t think of a single act of hatred that couldn’t already be prosecuted
We desperately need a Constitution in the UK. It should not be the government of the day to decide who gets access to public body contracts unless it is embodied into law.
In the last 50 years, what percentage of terrorist attacks in the UK have been committed by:
1. the IRA
2. Islamic faiths
3. Other & non Islamic faiths?
