I mean looking at anything in nominal terms will be a record high most of the time. Affordability is in fact improving though.

House prices are at a record high, so are mortgages…. in other news…..

House prices and mortgage amounts have actually fallen when taking inflation into account

Is that not expected that every year prices go up? That’s how inflation works.

Generational wealth transfer from young people taking on relatively massive loans from banks to hand hundreds of thousands of pounds straight over older folk who had the fortune of buying property years previous

£21k for a deposit, then £1k a month for 25 years.
It’s . . . affordable, if you can get the deposit together.

I mean, at £210k, they’re practically giving it away. What is that a mortgage on a cardboard box?

Looking at buying at the moment, Jesus, I wish we only needed a mortgage of that much.

We are seeing the same with cars, no one seems to want a starter home straight away, just like no one buys a junker to get around in.
Different times is all.

A more interesting metric would be % of mortgage vs house price.
Or % of income as mortgage.
My mortgage costs about double my all my other bills, and food combined. Sometimes I think about cancelling Netflix to save £15, then the next day £2200 comes out for the mortgage 🤣

Coming to this thread from the doctor strike thread kinda makes me feel like we have plenty of money to pay doctors a fair wage but we insist on locking it up for decades to pay for shelter.

The amount of bots in here saying this is ok and normalising it is insane.
I am not a first time buyer thank god. Long beyond that. But it’s fucking disgraceful the situation people find themselves in now. The ‘just do this’ and ‘this isn’t so bad’ and ‘affordability is improving’ is laughable.
Average first time house price being 5.3 x average salary is disgusting. Stretching people beyond their means and putting them one interest rate hike away from disaster.

No wonder our economys fucked after paying the mortgage utilitys and food who’s got money left to spend going out.
