    1. IMHO However the americans spell it, dont spell it that way. As the letter writers admit, there is more than 1 way to spell many words and, in Canada, we accept either.

    2. No! I want British spelling! 💂‍♀️💂‍♀️💂‍♀️Keep us away from those Zs the Americans are obsessed with, and their war on the letter U. 😭

      What is that stupidity?

The „British spelling“ (which is now not only British) is essentially the spelling of the English world outside of the United States.

The ONLY reason why ours is a bit different than Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore (who are all using the „British spelling“) is because of the high influence of the United States.

If these people really wants „elbows up“, they wouldn’t throw a fit because someone use a more international English. It’s not like they have forced the whole country to use this specific way of writing some words.

They really had to go through a legal document and start analySing it word by word? Wow.

    4. „Catalyse“ (like „analyse“) is the preferred form on both sides of the Atlantic. The Greek root of words ending in „-lysis“ (*lyo*) is distinct from the suffix „-izo“ that gives us verbs like „organize“. OTOH, even in the UK academic writing tends to prefer -ize endings.

I thought we used the British spelling, I didn’t go the first 13 years of my life misspelling armorgames as armourgames for them to tell them we DON’T do use British spelling.

      > Many Canadians are passionate about spelling words “Canadian” – but there are many opinions on what exactly is Canadian

Exactly. So what are we talking about? I’m legitimately unsure of what the story even is. Carney isn’t asking people in government to spell „tire“ as „tyre“ is he?

If not, then he’s asking to use Canadian spelling, isn’t he? If he is asking us to use „tyre“ then that is admittedly a little weird.

I always just assumed that the original story about Carney and British spelling was about prioritizing „s“ over „z“, etc.

Sorry. There is no way i will be assimilating to speaking or writing “American”

Neighbour & colour will always have a “u”

      No way!

    8. I also think the new direction is weird and pedantic. The Government of Canada has used Canadian Press style for decades and I don’t understand why we should change that.
