      So long as he doesn’t sign anything stopping them from joining in the future, sure, but don’t trust the US for anything. Just put the „We will join NATO“ on hold to „We’re not planning to join NATO at this precise moment“.

      Ukraines place is in NATO.

      If USA an EU signs legally binding guarantees similar to article 5 of NATO, it could be even better cuz there will be no chance for russia to cry about imaginary treats from NATO expansion. So russians never will accept such scenario obviously

      Seems similar to how the U.S. signed Taiwan into US law to be treated the same as countries with MNNA status, without formally designating it as MNNA because of the „One China“ policy.

      But still wonder if or what security guarantees the US will actually offer Ukraine, though. Taiwan had bipartisan support, but Ukraine is more mixed.

      Last time they had these guarantees the USA/UK did not do anything. Look up Budapest Memorandum.

      He’s better getting security guarantees from Europe than the US right now. I can’t trust Trump or any future administration over there. They are too unaccountable and chaotic. They cannot be taken seriously on the world stage anymore.

      NATO is the security guarantee…. Anything else isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

      NATO is basically dead at this point. Smart move actually. They need UN or EU boots on the ground and a firm deterrent against further russian aggression. The US will sell out Ukraine first chance they get.

      I can’t believe he would trust anything coming from the US after all he’s been through.

      I would assume that if he actually is willing to drop NATO membership, he is actually betting on the (very likely) outcome that Russia would STILL decline the agreement.

      Pretty sure he knows USA can’t provide any guarantees.

      I’d rather see a coalition with Canada, UK and Ukraine, and ditch Hungary as a clear security threat.

      This is fine and realistic for the short term.
      Ukraine defense industry will hopefully be strong and become an exporter with the ongoing collaborations. So NATO will be more interested in what they can learn from Ukraine, than Ukraine from NATO. Ukraine will get western jets anyway in the next years.
      Russia will still lick its economical wounds for years, hopefully collapse and get rid of Putin at some point. And at that point everything is fair game again, just like Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact couldnt stop East European countries from rushing to join NATO, because Russia was too weak.

      Only firm security guarantee is the ability to match MAD with muscovy. Period.

      Many of you are, hopefully unintentionally, using russian disinformation talking points. 
      Even in the trump administration the US has reaffirmed its commitment to NATO has been helping Ukraine strike in Russia and is selling advance hardware to its european allies. Poll after poll shows that Western European countries are less likely to defend countries like poland or romaia then the US is yet you talk as if you are all willing to sign up for the front lines of a conflict. 
      I understand trump says dumb things all the time,  but also many headlines are ragebait and it seems no one bothers reading the articles which usually disproves the headline.

      Ideally Europe would be the guarantor, but throwing Canada in there too wouldn’t be a bad idea. Theres almost no point putting the US in there given their vassal status at this point.

      The „firm security guarantees“ Ukraine were given in exchange for giving up their nuclear weapons were worth about as much as this would be.

      Whether or not the US returns to a more stable state, NATO and EU membership should be Ukraines right to apply for, and should be how Ukraine secures her future.

      Personally at this point I would not be at all unhappy to give the US what it seems to wish for, and let it withdraw entirely from the world and turn itself into North Korea.

      From a realpolitik perspective Ukraine should move closer to China and make all kinda purchases from there.

      China is only country where Russia doesn’t have hold on politics like they do in here Europe (Hungary, right-wing parties) or United States.

      In both World Eats the US stayed out until it was directly attacked. Europe is nuts if it thinks the US will stand by it. Never has until attacked. But when US needs to take out a country boy is it ever screaming for the ‚willing‘ to help. Just an asshole country overall.

      Trump won’t last forever and things will get back to normal.

      NATO is still ou best option against Russia.

      Yes, Europe must organize and arm itself to become independent of the USA, but NATO is stillvery much the best option so far.

      And Putin’s guarantees are worth nothing.

      In the end NATO was supposed to be a credible security guarantee. If that could be replaced by a similarly credible guarantee it would be equally valuable, but Russia gets the symbolic win of preventing NATO expansion.

      Unless Europe creates a new framework, NATO is the firm security guarantee. Anything less invites future invasions.

      What he really means is security guarantees which would in fact go further than nato article 5 and would be utterly unacceptable for Russia.
