    1. It seems ridiculous.

She has no substantive policies or answers to the problems plaguing Japan and is proposing to throw around some cash while potentially raising income tax (and not reduce consumption tax), yet younger people appear to think she’s great.

A triumph of style over substance.

    2. To be fair consumption tax cut is a terrible policy that should never have been considered. VAT is a huge part of Japan government budget, and any cut will significantly impact any spending plans for a much longer period. At least handout is one time cost rather than ongoing decrease in revenue.

I’d rather not have handout either, but if they do it it better comes with a strict income ceiling (i.e. For households earning less than 5m a year for single income and 8m a year for dual income or something like that).

I would say she is also popular because while the same policies are tackled, she is achieving actual results within short time that people can see.

Unfortunately there is not much focus on the average person and improving their livelihood. The focus is a lot on improving foundations of Japan in terms of technology and security, which is of course important for the long term, but won’t help people suffering right now. And that is where I’m currently disappointed at LDP hindering the implementation of some of the DPP policies right now that would address that.

That’s because they’re not deciding her favourability based on that but her giving GYNA the finger and her full support to Taiwan.

She is bringing hope for many but that’s just an image of freshness. The old apparatchiks will just die off but being replaced by likes of Koizumi, Onoda who will for many decades from now rotate between ministries doing eff all. Country side will continue to depopulate, They will raise taxes eventually, privatize healthcare and pensions. Worker shortage be it factories/JR or even the police will continue. She will eventually resign. Japan isn’t doomed though. Just slow decline.
