„Gavrilov’s Night“ started in 20th June of 2019 after Russian MP Sergey Gavrilov sat in the Speaker’s chair in Georgia’s Parliament, which instantly set people off. A small group of furious protesters tried to push into the parliament entrance. The police reacted by unloading tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets on everyone in the area – tens of thousands of people who weren’t even near the entrance. Officers were openly shooting at journalists and aiming rubber bullets at people’s heads.

Even after the protest was already cleared, police kept chasing people down the nearby streets and firing at them, leaving several protesters with serious injuries, including permanent eye damage.

Later, the government decided the whole thing was Giorgi Gakharia’s fault – the same Minister of Internal Affairs who was then promoted to Prime Minister right after the incident. And the current PM claims that happened because of a – quote – “phone call from the Deep State”

So the Georgians who are still protesting against the oligarchy will now be the ones paying even more to cover this?
