    1. So fucking dumb from Tesla.

We absolutely want to work with cameras!

Cameras that can get a sunflare, will be blocked if the window is dirty, and wont see through stuff like fog or heavy rain.

Tesla shot themselves in the fucking foot lol

I remember the Wile E Coyote test that proved Lidars are much more better than cameras at telling if a wall is real or not. Good for Rivian to use a more superior tech.

Musk needs to completely pivot to SpaceX and such, because Tesla is destined to be an albatross

So Audi is removing LiDAR and changing to cameras in some of its models and Rivian is doing the opposite.

Originally the model 3 has lidar and while it was in the software stack FSD worked pretty good. Then COVID and musk couldn’t get lidar anymore so he removed them from the software stack and FSD sucked for a long time. It’s probably just now catching back up to where it was. But everyone here is right, cameras only is not the answer. There are too many “false” reading with just cameras. As humans we have intuition and we make educated guessed based on our experience but computers can’t do that yet. Everything has to be programmed in and I think you can program everything in with just cameras.

    6. They didn’t say that. The article writer drew those conclusions instead.

      This article is click bait.

    7. I’ve liked Rivian since *Long Way Up* (which if you haven’t seen, fix that ASAP). They are a wee bit pricey, tho.

Yeah, would be nice if Rivian also added CarPlay support.

No, we aren’t going to drop it after „Rivian CEO doubles down“ on his crappy infotainment system.

Wow they did their market research by watching YouTube videos that told them this years ago

    10. Tesla doesn’t use them to save money, but tbf, we drove fine without lidar.
Of course, it is harder without lidar and radar.

I’m all for better safety in EV’s and self-driving tech. I wonder if they will address the current Lidar issue that can damage digital camera sensors.

Isn’t Lidar harmful if pointed towards the eyes? There’s evidence it destroys camera pixels when pointed at them. How could this be prevented in a city full of those cars? Just don’t look at them? Special glasses? Would there be countless unreported accidents due to lack of regulation/lack of education towards these topics?

Musk is right, all you have to do is remake the entire human brain in digital. Then you can do only cameras. Super easy, hardly an inconvenience.

    14. So the car will end up even more expensive? Hopefully not rivian needs to be for more people not just rich dudes

    15. Superhuman, that’s what Rivian had on the slides, and that’s always been my opinion.

Elon has basically said humans get by with really just vision, cars can too, and I think he is probably right, but Tesla obviously isn’t there.

But why should we settle for „as good as people“. People suck at driving, I want better, I want superhuman. That’s what lidar and radar gives you. I want a car that avoids obstacles that no human could possibly avoid. Maybe that’s driving in whiteout conditions, maybe it’s an animal darting across the road. That’s the real reason to use the tech, I can drive myself, but I can’t drive as safely as the vehicle because I don’t have radar and lasers shooting out my eyes.
