I see no point of provoking China nor does the China’s heavy-handed approach make China seem strong and secure.
This whole thing just seems like theater… However, I think it’s a consequence of historically keeping the relations purposefully „ambiguous“.
Basically, they have agreed on terms of „You keep quiet about Taiwan, we keep quiet about Taiwan, and we just let business go as usual“. It’s basically based on the East Asia’s traditional „saving face“ culture and preferring to keep contentious issues purposefully ambiguous. Actually China loves to do this.
But there comes a time when people want to set things clear and draw clear lines, like when far-right and fear-based politics emerge.
