A party requires a minimum of 12 seats to receive official party status, the NDP are barely just over half way. If they were 1-2 seats away, I’d say give it to them, but this is pathetic.
So, he’s saying the LPC is centre-right and not working well with others, and the Bloc and CPC are playing games, so the NDP should be given official party status so that they can be on committees. So he’s willing to work with a centre-right party, which the NDP is ostensibly against, that’s not working well with others? I don’t see how the circle is squared here.
???. What does the NDP want the threshold reduced to? The number of seats they actually received? Sounds questionable. Even the current 12 seat threshold is less than 5% of the House. They know the rules. You get influence in a democracy by running a campaign that resonates with the voters.
The NDP returned to groveling on their knees to the liberals quite quickly. I don’t even see how official status for a 7-member party is workable: each MP would have to sit on at least three different committees!
How about no? They didn’t earn official party status, they don’t deserve official party status, and they didn’t even support the budget or work on good faith to get it passed. If they are going to act that way, what incentive do the LPC have to prop them up?
Let’s also not forget that when the BQ lost official status after the 2011 election (4 seats) and 2015 (10 seats), the NDP, of which Davies was part of leadership, actively campaigned against providing status to the BQ. Karma’s a bitch, and Davies is a hypocrite.
I think Canadians were VERY clear at the last elections. They found the NDP not worth to be elected in the current political and economic situation.
This should be a clear message for the NDP: Stop following ideologies that, although might look nice, are NOT what Canadians are asking right now.
In other words: Read the room!
asking for concessions in return for votes is exactly how a minority government always works not sure why this specific ask pisses people here off so much. it’s as if the limits on official party status were handed down by God and not an arbitrary rule that parliament can change at will. the bloc has asked for this before as well as have many provincial parties
He can use that bargaining chip for the third budget. Maybe second but something tells me the NDP won’t want to bring the government down then.
If anything, the 12th seat threshold should be increased not decreased. There are many more seats in the House of Commons today than there were when the current threshold was set.
Be careful what you ask for, New Democrats, opening this for discussion could result in an outcome you do not want.
It’s so hard being a NDP supporter in 2025.
Guys you got no leverage, while this is nice they aren’t just gonna give it to ya.
Wow the NDP made itself look like a joke under Singh, but I guess now they’ve come full circle and just are a joke completely.
With all do respects NDP the BQ got 11 seats and didn’t get official party status. This is a lesson and punishment of the Canadian people you aren’t entitled to official party until you get 12 seats until then shut up and work on regaining the trust of voters.
