“For Artur Wilczynski, a former intelligence officer with the Communications Security Establishment, the codifying of the “America First” policy in a security strategy lays out a justification for political interference along with economic warfare in the Western Hemisphere to which Canada belongs.

“We will reward and encourage the region’s government, political policies and movements broadly aligned with our principles and strategy,” page 16 of the White House document states.

“That sounds like a lot of meddling in our internal affairs. And that (the U.S.) will use all its instruments of trade craft. Will the American government support movements that run counter to Canadian interests?” Wilczynski says.”

Oof, and the US has a perfect wedge issue available for the dark money funnel. The pipeline. On one side you have corpos with unlimited lobbying budget and on the other you have First Nations groups and environmental groups with flexible book keeping policies.

Edit: and a federal government in between with no foreign lobby register.

    2. „That relationship has not been shaken over the last several months and (past) year.“

Of course it has been shaken, when the country that you’re working closely with in these areas is actively damaging your economy with punitive tariffs on key industries. That undermines everything.

Part of me wishes he would be honest about this, but then I remember that the Canadian govt is in a very difficult position. They have to walk a tightrope between expressing to the Trump admin that what they are doing is unacceptable and damaging, and not provoking the ire and infantile rage of Trump and getting punished with more tariffs. What a sad situation.

This is off topic but I find it morbidly hilarious that David Mcguinty has managed to fall into a portfolio as important as Defence Minister just by…existing as a liberal MP for long enough. When we finally get around to Electoral Reform we really should really carefully consider whether its actually worth having cabinet ministers be limited to MPs. I really don’t get the democratic value we gain from this system.
