Fair enough. I suspect the big issue here is less what the ECHR says and more about the caselaw and conventions have developed around it. UK Government has spoken about this and seems to be aiming to legislative to address it within the UK. This is obviously the right thing to do, but is likely to complex to be widely understood by a public who are now constantly hammered with the ‚we must join Putin in rejecting the ECHR‘ narrative from all the people who used to blame the EU for everything wrong in their lives.

The issue will be even if it has got wide spread support, all signatory nations need to agree to substantial changes and it would end up taking years, even up to a decade. Too late for Starmer. Reform will continue with their rhetoric to leave the ECHR and who knows may actually try to

On the face of it, this is the closest we’ve come to an admission that we have a problem at least. No doubt it will be met with much clapping and barking by the beach seals who up until now have been pushing the opposite narrative.

No problem with it in theory. I’ve been suggesting for years that revising the various refugee treaties is the only solution.

      HOWEVER

      >> Sir Keir Starmer has urged European leaders to reform human rights laws to make it easier to deport illegal migrants

This has fuck all to do with ‚illegal migrants‘. Why do they insist on lying and using divisive, misleading language even when ostensibly they’re engaged in something sensible and productive.

The plan is to designate many transit countries as safe. Countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco.
If your journey to Europe is through any safe country, then you’re automatically rejected from claiming asylum in Europe.

Personally, I think the asylum system has been weaponised by smugglers for profit, and foreign governments who have an agenda to destroy the European Union.

Someone fleeing persecution in Afghanistan only needs to go to any of the neighbouring countries to be ‘safe’. The same is true for Sudan, Syria etc.

Pragmatic, effective solutions are needed immediately to prevent the deliberate damage to European democracies…

The external EU borders need to be closed.

Otherwise national borders will be brought back in.

    7. They were written during a time when we naively thought other groups could collectively grow to develop 1st world cultural standards and become our equals. The ECHR needs a complete overhaul.

    8. We’ll see how it goes. In my opinion it’s too early to be anything other than cautiously supportive or cautiously against. Until it’s over we’ll have no idea if they’ll succeed or what the positions of countries will even be… it wouldn’t be the first time a politician has lied about their goals going into an international meeting to score political points, although hopefully this won’t end the same way.

I’d rather not get mediocre reform that pleases nobody and alienates everybody, leading to a referendum a short while later that ends in us leaving the ECHR.
