      The US President has lashed out again at Ukrainian President [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/topic/volodymyr-zelensky?ico=in-line_link) as [US peace efforts limp on](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/trump-accused-zelensky-not-reading-peace-plan-heres-what-doing-4093253?ico=in-line_link), saying he needs to “get his act together and start accepting things” because Russia has the “upper hand” in negotiations.

      Trump lobbed his latest bombshell at [efforts by Ukraine’s European allies](https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/09/donald-trump-full-interview-transcript-00681693) to end the war in a *Politico* interview published on Tuesday. “They talk, but they don’t produce,” he said. “And the war just keeps going on and on.”

      He did not deny that he could abandon peace talks, after one of his sons suggested that he might, saying that was “not correct but not exactly wrong.”

      Donald Trump Jr on Monday told Sky News: “I think he may. What’s unique about my father is, you don’t know what he’s going to do.”

      He added: “The American public doesn’t have the appetite [for funding the war].”

      The original [28-point peace plan](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/ukraine-agrees-trumps-peace-plan-us-media-4065230?ico=in-line_link) cooked up between US and Russian aides prompted outrage among Ukraine’s Western allies for accepting maximalist demands by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, including surrendering Ukrainian land, neutering its army, allowing Russia to effectively veto its membership of Nato, and offering full amnesty for [perpetrators of war crimes committed during Russia’s invasion](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/inside-ukraine-hunt-russian-war-criminals-2630792?srsltid=AfmBOopFoPP0_Ivw1-GRHfB2BqYFmZTh6dH9vbbzC-IQs-jttGQorrFe&ico=in-line_link).

      A recording of Steve Witkoff speaking with a top Putin aide revealed Trump’s special envoy had coached the Russians not to back down on their demands when dealing with the US President.

      European allies have rallied around Ukraine to push back against some of the demands, with their revisions in turn rejected by [Russia](https://inews.co.uk/topic/russia-ukraine-war?ico=in-line_link). Moscow has likewise ramped up its claims that Europe and Ukraine are obstructing peace, while lavishing praise on Trump’s efforts.

      Although Trump has expressed frustration with Russia’s intransigence, he has reserved the majority of his ire for Ukraine and its European allies, whom he views as an obstacle to his desired rapprochement with Russia – as well as the lucrative business opportunities he believes will follow.

      He abandoned them on the first day of his presidency and he was just giving breadcrumbs to them. Only he knows how much intelligence he passed on to pootin.

      Trump has been playing against Ukraine straight from beginning.

      What does „abandon“ even mean? The US has already ceased providing aid.

      Is Trump saying the US will stop allowing Europe to purchase US manufactured weapons for shipment to Ukraine? Is the US saying it will stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine? Is the US saying it is going to drop sanctions and normalize relations with Russia? Is they US saying it is going to start selling weapons to Russia? Is the US going to start sending military advisers to Russia to assist in the invasion of Ukraine?

      The only way the tide turns on Ukraine is if Europe, not the US continue to sit on the sidelines of the fight.

      I believe he has already been actively turning the tide against Ukraine, just look at the timeline of when Russia started to make gains again. If not purely by his statements from the beginning that indicated a lack of support for Ukraine and thus stimulating Russia to double down and increase activity.

      Our generals who understand the reality of the situation of global security and strategic stability in the region, should not all this to happen. They need to remember their own oaths if the time comes. Russia cannot be allowed to win.

      Could? He hasn’t provided for the defense of Ukraine at the start of year.
      Instead he’s trying to lift sanctions on Russia.
