    1. Following President Donald Trump’s claim that Ukraine is “losing” the war against Russia’s ongoing invasion and that Moscow now has the “upper hand,” [multiple officials told CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/09/politics/ukraine-russia-battlefield-situation-trump?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=missions&utm_source=reddit) there are no new US or European assessments suggesting there have been significant changes on the battlefield and they don’t see any indications President Vladimir Putin’s forces are likely to win the conflict quickly.

The assessments paint a nuanced picture, with Russia making small gains on the frontlines and now approaching key Ukrainian supply lines, but at an enormous cost in military casualties

“Russians are creeping in but it is not a fundamental change from what has been happening over the last several months,” a Ukrainian military official told CNN.

“The truth is that in this last year, Russia has gained less than 1% of Ukrainian territory. So that, of course, is not the winning of the war,” Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze told CNN Monday. “That’s not the objectives Putin and Kremlin is looking for. He wants to deny Ukraine its sovereignty. He wants to subjugate Ukraine as a country. So they are not getting that on the battlefield.”

But officials made clear the situation is challenging for Kyiv.

“Ukraine is incrementally losing strategic ground in the east through attrition and limited defensive positions,” a senior US official said.

    2. Trump has no idea what’s actually happening he just quotes his master Putin

    3. Russian has failed to achieve any thier stated objectives after 4 years of war.

They have not even regained all the territory they lost after Ukraines first counter offensive.

    4. Even back in the campaign, if not earlier, Trump has said he believes Putin over US intelligence agencies.

[Trump makes shocking comments about trusting Putin over US ‘intelligence lowlifes’ | The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-putin-fbi-nsa-lowlifes-b2272343.html)

I do not believe this is a thought-out thing on his part. Putin is many things Trump wants to be: powerful, rich, feared, famous, manipulative. Intelligence officers are: anonymous, average income, and not into public drama.

QED Trump wants to be (and believe) Putin or someone with a similar charisma. Trump recently fell in love with Zohran Mamdani, the guy who just won the mayor’s race in New York, and Mamdani is literally the opposite of Trump and Putin except for being charismatic and winning a major race in a big way. Trump envies people who can make headlines and be „in control“. That’s it. Spies and intel officers are not those things.

Trump lashes out at Russia whenever Russia insults him or Trump realizes he was played, but then he ends up going back for more. The trick is to nail an aid package or get him to sign an agreement while he’s in one of his „Russia tricked me, agh!“ moments

One effort to combat this tendency was to try giving Trump his daily briefings … by turning it into a reality tv show: [Tulsi Gabbard Wants Fox Hosts to Feed Trump Top Secret Intel: ‘Doesn’t Read’](https://www.thedailybeast.com/tulsi-gabbard-wants-fox-hosts-to-feed-trump-intel-doesnt-read/)

Zelensky’s offer to nominate Trump for a Nobel if the war ended was a good measure, and may still work, but Trump has always lived by pretending to be unpredictable, and his mental decline is not helping that situation

    5. He said Russia is winning because it’s a bigger country. Afghanistan and North Vietnam were smaller countries and the bigger US quit. Does Trump remember that?
