Realistically Donald Trump probably does not have the political capital to terminate CUSMA in the lead up to American mid-terms, but their negotiators have certainly done a better job at conveying their readiness to burn it all down, as in this interview (which belaying the headline is actually about threatening the very thing Hoekstra claims not to want). Our side on the other hand always likes to announce in advance that we expect a deal any day now.

    2. Why do we listen to this guy at all? He has no authority. It’s been proven time and time again none of what these people say or do matters all. Negotiating with them is a waste of time, because all that matters is what Trump says, and he’ll change his mind by the minute.

This is just more bluster and rhetoric from Donald Trump.

He doesn’t want to terminate CUSMA – he doesn’t have the stomach to handle the fallout it would have in his domestic industry.

He makes the lives of the diplomatic arm of the US Government incredibly difficult, but this is something we should accept from Pete Hoekstra at face value.

    4. CUSMA isn’t going anywhere, it’s obvious when they are complying with 95% of it. Terminating it would be extremely damaging to their economy. The talk about it is just the media doom and gloom train.

Keep diversifying regardless of next year’s outcome. Canada can’t stop trading with the USA, but we must lessen our dependence.

We don’t care even if the US does. We’re moving on. It would be incredibly stupid (but that’s status quo in the US).

The U.S. has just as much to loose by withdrawing from trade agreement as Canada does. The reality is the trade between Canada and the U.S. is mostly balanced. If they withdrew then all of the cheap raw materials they get from Canada would also be gone. You cannot spend 50 years integrating economies and then in one four year term decide to do away with that integration without hurting both sides equally.

Great agreement you have with us huh? Sure would be unfortunate if something bad happened to it, know what I’m sayin‘?
