Are we really surprised though? The extent to which the ‚old global order‘ centered on US leadership being over as Carney once proclaimed is fundamentally true, just not for Canada. It’s abundantly clear that either the extent of our relationship was too deep and/or too valued for our moneyed interests to part with completely. Aside from daily consumption, there doesn’t look like much decoupling is going to occur given how much we sold off our domestic potential decades prior.

    2. You can tell this journalist has never ran a tender, or scored competing bids.

Go back to the original tender documents and there should be a breakdown on how the scoring will happen and what is scored.

    3. Even if the F-35 is the best plane, there’s other considerations at play.

Lockheed can’t even confirm that parts produced in Canada won’t be subject to tariffs.

Which leads me to think all F-35 production will be in the USA.

The F-35 is a 5th gen fighter. Even with Block 3 software it’s a better aircraft. But this assumes that have the means to fly it.

      $190mm sticker and $50k/flight our isn’t cheap.

Its like comparing a Honda Civic to a Porsche. The Porsche is undoubtedly the better car, but can you afford it?

    5. The interoperability issue looks very different in today’s political climate than it did when that evaluation was carried out four years ago. At this point, compatibility with US systems seems like at best a neutral quality, with strong arguments for it being a negative one. Consider the RCMP‘s recent announcement that they are shelving all their Chinese-made drones due to security concerns.

    6. When the Prime Minister is making a political decision, and a report mysteriously gets leaked seeking to influence public opinion, that’s political interference.

It’s on the military to let the PM know which fighter has better defense capabilities. But it’s on the PM to determine whether the geopolitical and industrial benefits outweigh the military ones. Whether or not that’s something to even consider for a military procurement is a valid question, but that’s a question to be determined by the electorate and the elected.
